Is Productivity Dead?

314424488_dec7cf0885_m.jpgYesterday, I read a great blog post by Brad Blackman on Mysterious Flame that put into words something that’s been running around the back of my mind lately — namely, that the productivity trend is on the downslide.

As Blackman puts it, the whole “productivity” scene appears to have lost steam. And I agree. In some of the historically popular productivity blogs, participation and interest have waned, or in some cases ceased altogether. I wrote recently about how one of my fave productivity gurus, Merlin Mann, has ditched the original concept of his 43 Folders blog and is now more focused on creativity. Another of my go-to reads, David Zinger, has also switched gears recently.

So what’s going on? Is productivity really dead?

I think it’s more that the productivity movement has gotten so complicated it’s defeating its original purpose. After all, when you spend more time cataloging your files and your to-do lists and your calendar than you spend actually DOING stuff, it’s pretty useless, don’t you think?

That’s why I’ve never hopped on the official Getting Things Done/David Allen bandwagon. I’m not saying it’s not a great system that works for a lot of people. But I am saying it’s too granular and too time-consuming to work for me — and for many of the busy professionals I know.

And I think people are now backlashing against the idea that you have to have a complicated, all-encompassing, workflow-based system in place to be truly productive. As Nick Cernis put it, our obsession with productivity can get in the way of our lives.

For me, finding shortcuts to streamline my day is a better approach than wholeheartedly converting to a global productivity methodology. And that’s what I’ve been trying to share with my Team Taskmaster readers: tips and strategies that you can implement in part, or in whole, to make your lives just a little bit faster, easier, and more productive. It’s more a “Get in, get some ideas, get on with your day” approach than a “Revamp your entire life from the ground up” philosophy.

So, no, productivity isn’t dead. It’s just that we need to make our productivity endeavors fit into the dynamics of our daily lives, rather than ruling them.

    RE: Is Productivity Dead?

I read an article on BNET the other day about how too busy people can be less productive and most of the comments referred to how people used their "productivity methodology" to get organized every day before they started to work. The article, in my opinion, was pointing out that multi-tasking was less productive and the little productivity methods were more productive.

HA...I say!! I spend most of my days multi-tasking between phone calls, answering emails, working on projects, answering my cell phone, talking to people, dealing with emergent work, meetings, and so on and sometimes 2 of these things at a time. I would never get ANYTHING accomplished if I took the time (that I don't have) at the beginning of the day to prioritize my work because my day as it unfolds prioritizes my work for me and re-prioritizes it sometimes in the middle of the day!!

I've worked for the federal government for 24 years and am at the top of my field where I'm at...I am a manager of a program for an Air Force Base. I do my job and do it well; I'm well thought of by my HQ. But without multi-tasking I would never get my job done.

Productivity is not dead...but I think those cutesey little "productivity systems" are DEAD and I hope they stay that way!! The people who have time for those (in my opinion) don't have enough work to do!!

    RE: Is Productivity Dead?

I like your approach of adding small ideas to help your day rather than revamp it all. Different techniques are going to mesh differently with each of us.

    RE: Is Productivity Dead?

If some of us have so much of time to discuss productivity, its pretty obvious that we are not being as productive as we should be in our current area of work. Productivity is definitely on its way down.

    RE: Is Productivity Dead?

Hey, thanks for the mention! I agree, productivity in itself isn't dead. I do think the "religious" productivity systems are losing traction for a number of reasons, number one being their complexity. Why jump through all these hoops to be more "productive"? I agree with you on the "Get in, get some ideas, get on with your day" approach. Revamping your life is really a last-ditch measure, or one to take when starting out. Anyway, great post, great commentary. Looking forward to more great stuff from you!
