Should We Embrace a Four-Day Workweek?

4daycalendar.jpgAs the price of fuel continues to skyrocket, there’s a workplace trend afoot to shortening workweeks to save energy. In Utah, administrative offices will be closed on Fridays while hours will be extended Monday through Thursday.  Birmingham, Ala. implemented a truncated schedule for city employees on July 1, and officials in Montgomery County, PA are considering a four-day plan as well.

In addition to reducing fuel costs and electricity usage, a four-day plan could actually improve your workplace. Robert LaJeunesse has argued that a shorter workweek is correlated with higher productivity.  That’s supported by a recent Brigham Young University study that found a four-day work week may increase job satisfaction and productivity. Aaron Newton also points out that a four-day workweek could reduce absenteeism, decrease labor costs, and improve both employee morale and efficiency.

In a real-world example, says Time magazine, Brevard Community College in Cocoa, Fla., went to four days for the 2007 summer session and saved $268,000 in energy costs. And over the year, sick leave fell 50%, and turnover among the 1,500-person staff dropped 44%. There are also a host of non-work benefits: less traffic congestion, potentially reduced childcare costs, spending more time with family, more time for volunteering and community outreach. And really, who wouldn’t want a three-day weekend?

But it’s not an option that everyone embraces. Workers may struggle with child-care schedules and finding personal time, and a 10-hour workday can be grueling. And from a business perspective, it can be difficult to maintain a four-day schedule when your clients are still working five.

What do you think?

Do you like the idea of a four-day workweek?

    4 days

I'd known the 4 day work week could tip the work/life balance in your favor, but I'd not considered the fiscal benefits. Good insight.

RE: Should We Embrace a Four-Day Workweek?

I worked a four day- 10 hour work week in the past. I loved it. I had a 3 day weekend and I could take 2 days off and go somewhere for a week. one drawback, which may not apply to every company but did at mine, was on holidays. Holiday pay is 8hrs, so if I wanted a full paycheck, I had to add 2 hrs vaca time.

OF course you can imagine how this will be received in France where i live. The truth of the matter is that some people work already 10 hours every day and for 5 days. The 4 days at 10 hours will be a reduction in working hours but the question is what to do with the vacations, as you know that french vacations only leave 220 worked days per year.

Some laws make this hard to do

I love the flex schedule (4/10s or 9/80s) but some state laws make this tough to implement for hourly employees (CA comes to mind!).

I have worked in a few areas where this really is an issue and tough to try the flex schedule. The law as I understand it, is if an hourly employee works a 10 hour day, they are working 2 hours of OT. if OT is paid at time and a half that increases payroll by 10%. I think there are some work arounds (involving voting by the employees, etc).

but i am a big fan of it.

Absolutely! Since most of us are salaried slaves whose employers expect us to work 10 hour days anyway, it would be a welcome relief.

We are currently working a 4 day 10 hours schedule and I love it. Plus is seems that I have had less people call in sick and my productivity numbers seem to be up. But we just started this week so I will watch to see what happens

It gives people the much needed space for personal pursuits but childcare centres need to be on 5-day week.

    5 Days Obviously aren't working!

One can't possibly think that 5 days is better than 4. With energy costs rising, stock market crashing, and big corporations doing a nose dive, obviously what we are doing now isn't working. We need to focus on work be more productive and what better way than to allow more time at home? If those in the corporate world didn't have to worry about childcare, attending baseball practice, or placing a decent meal on the table, we could focus more on our goals at work. An extra day to do those things would allow it!

RE: Should We Embrace a Four-Day Workweek?

We've converted to the four day work week for the summer. It is supposed to save the organization a lot in energy costs...I'm all for that. It also helped me reduce the time that I'm away from the office. I need to schedule routine doctors appointments every 2-3 months. With this new schedule, I don't need to take time off during work to go to my appointments. I just schedule them all on Fridays. And even though M-Th is hectic and a bit longer, I"m getting more done at work knowing that I have one less day to complete certain tasks and when the weekend comes (Starting Friday) I can enjoy it and relax.

longer working hours for the 4 working days cant be the solution either if yours is the only company adopting it. the whole society will have 2 change accordingly to reap its true benefits. in the absence of such a wholesome change, the family life of the employees may suffer.

Get real, I'm on salary and average about 9.5 hours 5 days per week; I'm pretty sure we'd go under if we cut a day I'd just be here 12 hours every day. No thank you!

    Flex Time

We do however have a flex hours schedule that allows us to come in between 7-9 in the morning and leave between 4-6; works great for those with kids and lets the early birds beat the traffic.

    9 hr work day

After using a 4d/10hr system for six months, resulting in a sales and support team that was "burned out" we opted to modify to a 9hr work day where every week half the crew was gone on Friday. It worked exceptionally well.

The extra hour each day kept productivity high and the every-other week three-day vacation improved a number of personal criteria not the least was attitude. It was the best solution for all our team.

A direct result was an increase in sales & support activity that exceeded industry standards by an additional 10 percentage points, and greater customer appreciation to our greater accessibility.

    10 hours too long?

If 10 hours is burning them out, it is time to find a few new employees with a some mental toughness. Any manager will tell you that he or she is probably working between 10 and 12 hours a day 5-6 days a week already.

RE: Should We Embrace a Four-Day Workweek?

This is an excellent summary of the positives and negatives associated with a four-day workweek. Although it may work well for some employers and employees, it may not benefit everyone. The trick is to determine which businesses and employees will have higher productivity and improved life satisfaction by such arrangements. And for those where it is not a fit, develop alternative arrangements that meet business and employee needs such as job shares or flexible schedules.

I have always fancied the 4-day work week idea!

Many consulate offices/ embassies practice 3-day or 4-day work week and we wonder why their employees never change jobs ever!!! I do not think the 10-hour work day apply to them and I do not fancy the 10-hour bit.

In Sweden, 5-day work week applies generally and lunch break e.g. 1-hour is excluded for 8-hour work day. So I consider my work days 9-hour really and that is terrible coming from a tradition where I used to "work" 8-hour (lunch included, not to mention tea-break as well). Really, the work gets done as long as one is motivated. 1-2 hours here and there do not matter. Employers can give a treat always!

@anguillian I agree with you, could be different for other companies whereby if you take paid time off, you are paid for 8 hrs only. It would be sweet to have a 3 day weekend!

RE: Should We Embrace a Four-Day Workweek?

This is a 24 hour highly competitive society. The body needs REST and SLEEP to renew itself. Not having enough rest can lead to increase diabetes, stress which leads to heart disease, high blood pressure, weight gain & strokes. If you abuse your body and mind you will eventually pay for it.

It is proven you will preform better in school, at work, relationships, have greater memory if you get enough rest and sleep.

I know people are also spiritually starved because they are to tired to go to church from working all the time.

Your children and your family also suffer because you don't get to spend time with them.

If everyone would take a chill pill, then we could all be happier, healthier and possibly live longer. With less social & economical burden to society.

RE: Should We Embrace a Four-Day Workweek?

We have implemented both a 4/10 option and a 9/80 option (working 9 hour days for 9 of the 10 days in the pay period). Both have worked well and people enjoy these schedules. It can be challenging to get people to step up for extra hours or work when needed. this quickly becomes an entitlement mentality with workers. overall, I love it though.

RE: Should We Embrace a Four-Day Workweek?

Unfortunately, in the legal industry, we are not able to work 4 day work weeks. If a new client calls our office and receives voicemail, we lose that client to another law firm that has personnel at work on Friday. I certainly wish it could work in this industry. I would love the 4/10s!

I voted yes without even reading the article.

The way things are going they just seem to get worse, it might be a nice approach to manage life in a different way, we might have been put here to enjoy the world we live in.

RE: Should We Embrace a Four-Day Workweek?

Considering the expectation of most companies is to get 9-10 hours a day from salaried people I would welcome 3 day weekends to recover. Currently we work a 4-9's and half day on Friday, which translates to 4-10's and a 5 hour day. At least we beat traffic home on Friday. Most companies expect long hours because they equate time at work to productivity and dedication, which is hogwash. People work those kinds of hours out of fear, and grab their briefcases when the boss grabs his.
