Will Windows Vista Kill My Productivity?

2425602057_7207586878_m.jpgI’m toying with the idea of buying a new computer. Mine is about 6 years old and despite a bunch of upgrades, it’s barely limping along under the weight of all my applications and my penchant for multitasking.

The trouble is, I’m gun-shy about Microsoft Windows Vista. And unfortunately, if I want another Dell, I either have to buy an XP system by dawn tomorrow or take the leap of faith into Vista. Yikes.

Why am I leery of Vista? Well, there’s my knee-jerk discomfort with change. And while Vista is supposedly reliable, deep down I’m afraid it’s as awful as the critics say. Yes, I admit it: Those clever Mac/PC TV commercials have gotten under my skin — as in PC doing yoga to “breathe out the bad Vista energy.” (Or the episode with the “PCs Living With Vista” support group. Love that one.)

But the biggest reason is the worry that I’ll have to start over at Ground Zero, at the beginning of a new learning curve, and that all my hard-won efficiencies under XP will be tossed out the window. I’m a pro at leveraging what XP has to offer. I’m a newbie when it comes to Vista. Is that going to wreak havoc with my productivity?

I’m still debating my next move. Could be I’ll be online at midnight, frantically configuring one of the last available Dell XP machines. Perhaps I’ll just pull the Vista trigger. Or, if I’m going to really start from scratch, maybe it’s time to go all the way and see what Apple has to offer — and avoid the whole Vista issue altogether.

What should I do about a new computer?

Will Windows Vista Kill My Productivity?

No, it will kill your soul. It's already killed mine.

    Get over it ...

Vista is not nearly as bad as the "critics" whine about. Oh no, it might take you a few minutes but even if you only have 2 beer soaked brain cells left, you can operate vista. Sucks up RAM like a beast but if you like like to have 8-15 IE/FireFox windows, 3 Spreadsheets, 5 Word Docs, SQL Management Studio and 4 explorer windows open; you'll like Vista. Hot Keys are pretty much the same so all the things you 'lernt' on XP should translate.

If not, go Linux (Ubuntu). It's even more powerful and reliable than the cartoonish Mac.

I concur; It has ruined the very first quarterly results of my business as a consultant with all the F-ed up BS. Go to MAC, learn it, love it, and get with the LINUX program cuz no one is going to put up with MS BS any longer. Was that helpful?

    Vista

My Laptop from Dell with Vista arrived yesterday. I played around with it last night and found it pretty easy to learn. Actually, there wasn't much to learn, you just had to figure out how to navigate. The way the GUI displays folders and files reminds me of a Mac; I used to use one occasionally at work. Vista does use a lot of RAM. I have 4 GB and it used 1.19 GB while I was watching small Quicktime movies. I do like XP better, but I think I can get used to Vista in a week or two.

What Apple offers is a dual platform that currently the best in the
business... per no less than the wall street journal!

So go to your nearest Apple store and get the whole story from
what ever point of view you need, i.e business or what ever, then
buy one, even if it the least expensive Min-Mac and use it for a
month and you'll never look back.

Besides, if you must XP & Vista runs better on an Apple! Also Word
and Office are better solutions, i.e better written and better
software in general via a Mac... not that you really them them but if
you must spend the big bucks on M$ software then their there for
    the taking of your money.

My business, a rep agency for a hand full of manufacturers, is 100%
MAC based without any help from the folks at M$ and my life is a
whole lot better these days without the drama from M$

The computer world has made a paradigm shift of late and M$ is
not part of the new mix... it's time to wake up and smell the roses!

Besides your in the sweet spot for making the change and moving
on and yes you can take your M$ software with you if you must.

So go on line (http://www.apple.com/retail/business/) make an
appointment, wednesdays are best with a business partner in the
store, show up and spend a hour or two or what ever trying to trip
them up... when you fail... take a deep breath and buy a max out
iMac for your desk and a max out Mac Book Pro for the road, alone
with a 1TB Time Capsule and put your order in for a new 3G
iPhone... your thank yourself well into the future.
