284995199_c4d0989afd_m.jpgAre your time-management efforts not getting you the results you envisioned? Could be you’re making one of the five mistakes that can most easily get you derailed. Troubleshoot your technique by making sure that you aren’t doing one or more of these things:

1. Starting the day without a plan. If you’re winging it, you’re going to crash and burn. In an aimless day you’ll react to the first fire that needs tending and spend the rest of the day in defensive mode. Instead, take a moment first thing to prioritize your tasks and take a proactive approach to your time.

2. Getting busy without getting anything done. If you’re spending a large amount of time doing low-value work and finding it hard to achieve anything substantial, you need to cut back. Pare down what you’re doing to the essentials and put busywork in the backseat.

3. Not delegating. If you’re trying to do it all, you’re doing too much — and your work (and time) will suffer. The key is to delegate any task, from administrative to technical, that someone can perform better than you. And choose the right person for the job.

4. Working in a mess. A disorganized office creates both physical and mental clutter, distracts you when you’re trying to focus, and makes it difficult to find things. A clear workspace fosters clearer thinking and more productivity.

5. Trying to multitask. Working on two things at once results in both things suffering. Plus, you’re piling stress on yourself and making it tougher to switch gears when necessary. Instead, focus on one thing at a time; you’ll be surprised by how much more you’ll get done, and done well.

    Time Management Top 5 mistakes

Great article. In my time management coaching I see people falling for these mistakes everyday. And changing even one of them makes a big difference. When my clients and readers change several, they gain 5, 10 even 20 hours a week. The trick though is that while these things seem simple when written in an article, they are hard to do. And hard to maintain. I suggest a great starting point is to know where your time goes now. Track your time for 2 weeks and see what insights you get. You can get a free time tracking form and explanation on how to use it at http://www.time-management-central.net/time-management-forms.html. And remember to turn those 5 mistakes in to what you should do instead. Make a plan for each week and each day, spend time on high impact activities, delegate every day, keep your work area clean & tidy, focus on one thing at a time and do it really well.

    #4 not necessarily so!

I have to take issue with #4. My office looks like a bomb hit it, yet I know where everything is. If it were all neat and tidy, I'd waste more time trying to find everything I needed and then putting it all back and I wouldn't get anything done! It depends upon your personality traits whether a sparse or chaotic workplace suits you best. Heck I could even tell you over the phone where to find something in this 'mess' because there is a method to my madness. As Nietzsche said 'out of chaos comes order', that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

I don't think that item 5 belongs here. You are often have to multi-task or some people are just more efficient this way. Other four - I agree with.

Personality and work style play a role, which is why some people disagree with #4 or #5. My style, ADD that is, means I have to obey rule #5 or nothing gets done. However, if I have a clean office, its more because others see it as a sign of success rather than it playing any role in my true success - who keeps that much paper around anymore anyway?

Precise and concise presentation of essentials. I also appreciate the value addition by Mr_Time as the percentage of population who is aware of the mistakes but unable to change ways is more than those unaware of the time management mistakes!

#4. I had a Professor in college once tell me that a clean desk was the sign of a lousy engineer! To this day I believe him and think it goes for just about any other field too. If your desk is immaculate, you don't have enough work to do!!

#5. If you're not multi-tasking, you don't have enough work to do either...get some more work!!
