5 Classic Computer Pranks

Last Friday’s “Top 5″ post — about the best office pranks — got folks talking about shenanigans at work. One poster offered a gem about using the shimmer effect in Word, which got me thinking about a whole new class of goofs: mucking about with a co-worker’s computer.

Don’t get me wrong. For the most part, I think someone else’s laptop or desktop should be sacrosanct. I’d never condone deleting files, sabotaging a co-worker’s project, snooping, or other dastardly deeds. Messing with someone’s machine may be more likely to incite the prankee to violence than to prompt laughter.

But then again… some of the stunts I’ve turned up are frankly too good not to share. So if you’re in a virtuous mood, wait until April Fool’s Day to trot them out. But if you’re feeling just ever-so-slightly evil, perhaps some of these pranks have your cubicle-mate’s (or boss’s) name written all over them.

Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.

5) Edit Microsoft Word settings. In addition to defaulting all text to “shimmer” or “ants marching” (Format > Font > Text Effects), you can customize the autocorrect options to mock your hapless victim. Perhaps seeing each usage of “I” or his name replaced with “Mr. Poopy Pants” would be good for a chuckle. (Tools > Autocorrect Options > check “Replace Text as You Type” > insert desired words in “Replace” and “With” boxes.)

4) Make an optical mouse go haywire.
This one’s easy but oh-so-rewarding: Just tape a small piece of tape (color the nonstick side with a Sharpie) over the laser sensor. Presto!

3) Change the language settings. You can do this on Google, in Windows Vista, or in Microsoft Office, among other programs. Hilarity ensues as your coworker struggles to translate Turkish.

2) Fake a crash with a screensaver. Microsoft, in a funny bit of self-mockery, offers a Blue Screen of Death screensaver that is sure to sprout some gray hairs on your victim’s head.

And speaking of sprouting…

1) Go green with someone’s keyboard. Literally. As in, grow grass or a Chia pet in their computer keyboard — or, if you’re smart, a reasonable facsimile thereof. (The real keyboard may never recover, unlike the victim.)

    Sloooooow Mouse

My fave is to tweak the mouse to the slowest possible settings for speed. Watching somone drag their mouse from one corner of their desk to the other to only get the mouse to move 1 inch on the screen provides a good laugh.

    Great idea!

I love it. Easy, annoying, and no one gets hurt. Thanks for the idea!

    Some of my faves..

    Here's a few I've used...

If they still use a non-optical mouse (aka ball mouse), steal the ball. They'll go crazy trying to figure out what's wrong till they go to clean it and realize their mouse has been neutered!

If the user is not a touch typist, pop off the keytops of 2 of the keys on their keyboard and switch them. Try to use one seldom used letter like Q and a more frequently used one, like E. Do 4 or 6 for even more fun, or for complete hilarity, put their entire keyboard in alphabetical order. Or, if you have a spare keyboard handy, use some acetone (aka nail polish remover) to remove the letters on all the keys!

Another fun prank is to go into the mouse settings in the operating system and change the mouse to a left-hand oriented mouse. Now all right clicks become left clicks and left become right.

Set a screen saver on their computer to use the 'marquee' saver. Be sure to set the text size nice and big and colorful, and scroll speed slow enough to be read by passers-by. In the text box, have it display something embarrassing but not obscene (this is the workplace after all). Something like 'Ask me about my thong!' or 'I love porn!!'

The sound settings in control panel can be lots of fun too. You can set sounds for things like maximizing/minimizing windows, opening & closing programs, etc. If the user has speakers, this is a fun one. Especially if you get some interesting wav files off the internet for them!

    forgot one...

I remembered another simple one. Just unplug the keyboard and/or mouse from the back of the computer or half unplug it so it looks like its still plugged in.

    PS/2

If they're still using a ps/2 keyboard & mouse unplug them and swap the plugs. Alternatively change the local so the computer thinks a DVORAK keyboard is plugged in

LiveCD's are great for a laugh

When a co-worker leaves their computer save any open file they are working on and insert a liveCD (usually they contain a bootable linux operating system), restart their computer and set the screen saver to blank the screen. When they come back the look should be priceless when their OS, background, applications, everything is completly different!

Plus calming down the totally freaked out co-worker is easy...Just shutdown the computer, take out the CD and restart, everything is back to normal.....(more fun to restart once they left to seek help from someone in the IT dept.).

I once customized a liveCD so the desktop looked exactly like my co-workers. He left for lunch, came back and didn't notice until he went to the menu and all the applications were different. Ahhhhh, seeing the blood rush from his face.....priceless!

My co-workers lesson of the week....never prank someone who knows more about computers than you do.

    Upside Down Screen!

I can't believe they didn't include the upside down screen!

Alt Gr + Down. It doesn't work on all versions of XP, but it's brilliant when it does! You can also use Left and Right to rotate 90 degrees and Up to restore it to normal.

You completely forgot one of the true classics.

Change their keyboard layout to Dvorak.

This one's a popular one at Oregon State University's Open Source Lab, and the reason why everybody locks their terminals.

    RE: 5 Classic Computer Pranks

NO-NO-NO-NO!!!! You've all missed the VERY best two computer pranks of all time! They are a little bit more technical (But by no means hard!) than the above pranks, but after a little practice on your own computer you'll have it down so you can pull the trigger on it while they're up to the bathroom!!

    Change Desktop!!!
-First, take a screenshot (Control+Prnt Scrn) of their desktop with all programs minimized, JUST their desktop.
-Open up Paint, and Control+V(Paste) the picture into paint and save it to the desktop
-Next right click the desktop and under "Arrange Icons By" un-check the "Show desktop icons"
-THis will lag the computer a second, the screen will flash and there will be no active icons.
-Now right click on the desktop --> Properties and go to the display, browse for the screenshotted desktop you took before and add it as the background!
-THeir "Desktop" looks fine and normal, but the icons aren't real, it's just a picture!!!! Watch histerically as they try and click on non-existent shortcuts!!!!!

    RE: 5 Classic Computer Pranks

Next Best Prank of all time!!!

    Internet Explorer Icon/Link
First move their current internet explorer icon on their desktop to the recycle bin, don't worry this doesn't delete it, just gets it off the screen for prank-purposes! Right click on the desktop and click on "New Shortcut" under the "Add Address" field type EXACTLY:

shutdown -s -t 45 -c "Your computer has not recovered from a catastrophic failure, please bring CPE temperature down 30 degrees to avoid hard-drive deletion"

In the next field type in: Internet Explorer

Now in the desktop, right click the icon and go to "Properties" then go to the "Shortcut" tab, and click on "Change Icon" scroll almost to the very right and you will see a very similar "Internet Explorer" icon, add that as the icon and then on the desktop move the icon to where they had their old internet explorer icon!!!

What you just did is create a shortcut to shutdown the computer! Control/Alt/Delete will not work to stop it, they won't be able to click it away, the O-N-L-Y way to stop it is to open command prompt and type: shutdown -a

*Note* you can change the "time" till the shutdown, this is represented in seconds after the "-t" command you can also change what the prompt says after the -c command in between the quotations! I've seen people dump water on the computer, crawl under their desk and start blowing on it, it's great!!!!

    BOBETSKY's Sloooooow Mouse

    as i read bobetsky's post, i just about fell over from laughing so hard! in fact, i think i did fall over ??????????n???????????????????? pu?? ??d???? o?? ??u???????? ???? ?? pu?? ??????o ll???? p??p ??ll??n?????? ?? ??u?????? ?? ...
wait, okay, much better! typing on the floor is difficult, wouldn't you agree??

anyway, bobetsky's idea was such a wonderful idea and written/worded in such a manner that, as i read it, there was a vivid image of someone in front of their computer, moving the mouse from one side of their desk to the other, probably cursing or losing their mind, banging the mouse on the desk (that's what my 7-year-old son does when the computer does not 'obey!'), and clearly not having a clue!

now, that was classic! thank you for sharing and making me laugh! (and thanks for the idea -- i think i might try it tomorrow before my son decides to use the computer to watch that "Star-Wars Kid" video on youtube again!).

    RE: 5 Classic Computer Pranks

    @PsychoSavager:

Although that screen flip prank is fun, the reason not all computers support it isn't the OS, but rather the video card. Most Intel graphics cards do support the feature; I am not sure about other manufacturers.

Easiest way to tell is to open your Display Properties (Right-Click Desktop > Properties...), go to the Settings tab, and choose Advanced. You are looking for a tab now that resembles your video card brand. If you don't see one, then it won't work. On my computer, for example, I see a tab called Intel(R) Extreme Graphics 2. From there I can click on a button and look up the hotkeys that tell me if the screen flip is possible.

    Hope this clarifies a bit.

A few more from the archive

For some Sun Type 5 keyboards, there's a bank of switches on the bottom where you can change the language layout for the keyboard. This may not take effect until after the next power cycle, I'm not sure.

Insert a wireless mouse receiver in the back of the victim's system, and occasionally muck with the wireless mouse in your pocket when he/she is using it. This is even more fun with a wireless keyboard, but it's harder to hide one of these in your pocket, and the range on them tends to be rather small.

In the old days, it was possible to reverse the yokes on video monitors, resulting in a mirror image screen. This took tools and knowhow, however, so it's not practical these days (and LCDs don't have yokes). It could also lead to damage to the monitor, which ceases being a practical joke.

I was involved in others (either as the instigator or the victim) that would be impossible outside of the environment in which they were done, which was the firmware group at a company that made serial video terminals. If you can change the video firmware, you can really pull some pretty significant jokes.
