Motivational Posters Are Lame

toddinspirationalposter.jpgI love “How I Met Your Mother,” a sitcom that has some of the smartest writing on television. The set design and the inside jokes are clever, which is why I watched part of the last episode with my DVR set to super slo-mo in an attempt to decipher one of the snarky motivational posters (”Awesomeness”) on Barney Stinson’s office wall.

What it actually says is pretty funny, and it got me thinking about the real motivational posters you see in SkyMall — you know, the ones with misty images of rainbows and sunrises and wise quotes from philosophers and poets.

Do those hackneyed phrases really inspire teamwork or excellence? I doubt it. In fact, they’re lame. The only thing I’ve ever gotten from them was an idea for a poster chronicling my brother-in-law’s ill-advised leap off a cliff in Hawaii (pictured).

It turns out that the HIMYM scribes and I aren’t the only ones with that kind of skewed thinking; the folks at Despair.com have actually created a whole gallery of “soul-crushingly depressing” posters of this genre.

My two favorites: “Teamwork — A few harmless flakes working together can unleash an avalanche of destruction.” And “Idiocy — Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.”

Got any of your own to share?

    Geronimo!

"Idiocy -- Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups."

I used to be an avid skydiver, and this poster has an image of skydivers in a circular formation. When I saw it cracked up. I bought it and took it to my skydiving club. About half the members laughed like hell, including my instructors, but the other half (the dumb ones, I reckon) were incensed.

Some people (mostly dumb people) have no sense of humor about themselves!

Sense of humor a great motivator

Totally true! And I've found that a sense of humor -- about workplace politics, day-to-day stresses, co-workers and yes, lame management attempts for motivation -- do more to get people inspired and on the same page than just about anything else.

Aaah...despair.com. I have been a fan of that site for years. And I completely agree -- motivational posters are just silly.

    RE: Motivational Posters Are Lame

I loooove despair.com they are incredibly funny, but I disagree wholeheartedly with your statement that motivational posters are lame. They work, for many complicated pyschological reasons but the bottom line is, in this world so many of use are bombarded with negative messages either directly or indirectly. If seeing a positive motivational message will help someone move either by agreeance or chuckling because of the "lame" message, then so be it. If it makes them move in a positive direction and attain a goal great.

I will agree that if that is the only thing a company is doing to motivate their people then that is lame.

    In defense of lameness

Really? You think a poster on the wall saying "The lessons of the past provide the path to the future" would actually inspire you and improve your productivity or leadership qualities? I agree that at least these posters don't display negative messages, but come on...I find it hard to imagine these trite sayings really push people to great achievements. If you can say it works for you with a straight face, then I'll humbly acknowledge the source of your motivations. But for the most part, I think we'll just agree to disagree.

The pictures are pretty, though -- I'll give you that.

    RE: Motivational Posters Are Lame

Totally agree about humor in the workplace. It seems to ease tension and sort of grease the wheels of the workplace machine.

Not sure if I agree that Motivational Posters are Lame though. While many are sappy and over the top, I think that they act like advertising does on people. If you see Teamwork, Courage, and Leadership posters all over the place I think it does sort of sink in to your subconscious (much like Coors Lite commercials). You may laugh at them or think they are stupid when you see them, but over time I think they affect people (in a good way).

PS. Don???t read into this that I have dozens around my office. I only have one and it says Stupidity.
