Are You on the Verge of Burnout?

When I wrote last week about recognizing the signs of burnout and how to combat it, I was surprised by the volume of responses and readers.

Seems like many of you are intimately familiar with burnout, either because you’ve been there before or are struggling with work stresses now.

A recent CareerBuilder survey about stress backed up that second assumption, indicating that nearly a third of workers nationwide feel burned out.

Some more data from the survey, which polled 4,400 people:

  • 47 percent of workers reported they have taken on more responsibility because of a layoff within their organization
  • 37 percent said they are handling the work of two people
  • 30 percent feel burned out.
  • 34 percent of workers who kept their jobs after a layoff reported they are spending more time at the office to accommodate the workload
  • 17 percent are putting in at least 10 hours per day.
  • 22 percent are working more weekends.

Wow. That’s sobering.

I thought I’d run my own (admittedly unscientific) three-part poll of the Team Taskmaster universe. So tell me:

Are you burned out?

RE: Are You on the Verge of Burnout?

I think a large partpart of the problem today for anybody responsible for revenue earning, is the amount of effort and failures to be experienced before revealing any remunerative business.
A small glint of gold goes a long way to encourage people.
When you are struggling for survival, questions about job satisfaction seem misplaced, but there are only two options; give up, or keep fighting and hope to improve by experience. That can be motivating.

RE: Are You on the Verge of Burnout?

Our company President had a saying - "you can't be burned out unless you've been fired up" and I whole-heartedly agree.

I thought I was burned out a few years ago and I gave up a great career with a wonderful company. NOW I realize that it wasn't my job, which I loved, but rather unresolved issues in my personal life that caused those feelings.

My advice - before you give up and throw in the towel like I did, reflect on the whole of your life and don't let "burn-out" be your easy "cop-out."

RE: Are You on the Verge of Burnout?

I've worked for the federal government for 24+ years (Navy and Air Force) and am proud of my civil service career. What I am not proud of is what I have seen as an errosion of the civil service workers careers, jobs and rights.

I have seen the "do more with less" way of life come and stay as a way of doing business. I have seen the "good old boy" network at work everyday, no matter what they say and no matter how much they say they are trying to make the system fairer. I have seen people leave and the work just get spread out or handed off to those that stay with no promotions. I have seen an increase in "why should we reward you for doing your job". Hiring from within now means the job will go to a retiring military member so they can have a civilian job and not to someone who has worked for years within the unit so they can get a promotion.

This is how someone gets burned out!! They see no promotion, no recognition, and no way out!! We're too close to retirement, we need to job because we have a husband or wife to support, a child still in school, a son or daughter in college, a parent living with us, bills to pay, a crippling disease and need the insurance...there are so many reasons!! I have 7 1/2 years until I reach my minimum retirement age and believe me, I count them down all the time!! I pray that I can afford to retire at that time because I hate to come in every day! I am burned out!!
