How to Sell Like Jay Leno

I recently wrote a profile of Jay Leno for SellingPower magazine.  That article pointed out that Leno isn’t just an entertainer, but also a consummate sales professional.   Leno’s first job was in Sales (door-to-door, in fact) and he’s always been active in selling both his TV program and his numerous public speaking engagements.  Most recently, Leno led the charge to sell his new prime-time program to NBC affiliates.

In the SellingPower article, I included a sidebar entitled “How to Sell Like Jay Leno.”  The sidebar was intended for sales managers and had advice about setting up a sales team to encourage the kind of personable sales style — a combination of determination and likeability — that Leno uses.

Since Leno’s new TV show looks likely to be a big success, I thought it would be fun to revisit that advice.  You’ll have to find a copy of the magazine to get the full version, but here’s a shorter version, with a bit extra added (rule #6 is new):

  • RULE #1: Failure is never permanent. Leno wasn’t an overnight sensation.  Some of his early performances on Carson’s Tonight Show were weak and he didn’t appear on television for years. But he kept honing his skills and eventually became a regular guest on Letterman’s show, eventually earning him a guest host gig on Tonight, which led to his current success.
  • RULE #2: Work is better than vacation. Leno is famous for spending his free time doing personal appearances that help his career.  He seldom, if ever, takes vacations although he is quite generous in giving vacations to his staff.  The truth is that, unlike people who see work as a way to fund other “fun” activities, Leno see work as something that’s fun all by itself.
  • RULE #3: Fake it before you make it. Leno has a history of sticking his neck out to further his career.  For example, when Leno was just beginning to appear regularly on television, his career got a big public relations boost when he was selected “Best Face to Caricature” by the “American Caricature Association,” an organization that he invented.
  • RULE #4: Everyone is a potential customer. Unlike celebrities who remain distant from their public, Leno makes a point of being accessible.  He invariably waves and smiles when he’s spotted in driving one of his many rare automobiles. When hired for speeches, he greets and shakes the hands of as many people as possible.
  • RULE #5: Give back to the community. One way that Leno builds his image as a likeable guy is to dedicate time to community service.  For example, Leno has been known to fly at his own expense to Chicago or Detroit to do benefits for the homeless.  While Leno’s generosity is clearly genuine, there’s no doubt that it helps his “brand” when people view him as a nice guy.
  • RULE #6: Be generous with your thank-yous. After the original article appeared, Leno personally called SellingPower publisher Gerhard Gschwandtner and thanked him for the publishing the article.  He didn’t have to do that, but that gives you an indication of how Leno thinks.  Leno truly is the nice guy he plays on TV — and that’s why he’s so successful.

    Looks to me like Jay ultimately failed, brought down by risk-averse network higher-ups. Shuffled aside for the younger-skewing Conan
    [ultimately talent-challenged like Leno].
    Failing despite the high-profile talent brought in to hype his start-up weeks and ubiquitous ads on the boobtube, in theaters. Everywhere.
    This is a loser folks... for NBC and for Leno.
    Ta-da!. Not brain surgery... just programming, which the networks are losing to cable. Mebbe Jay will succeed, 'cause he'll be like Starbucks.... on every corner and mid-block. Unavoidable 'cause he's the only thing on ABC, CBS and NBC. Round-the-clock Jay, for the lowest common denominator viewers.

    The myth that you need to be a mean and selfish person to become successful is one of the worst beliefs to let into your mind. You'll sabotage your success, if you believe that, just to keep from becoming a bad person.

    Being a stand up you learn very quickly how to SELL.
    You are a salesman and your product is you and your
    words. Not all your words go over and you get instant
    reaction, not from just one person but sometimes
    everyone in the audience. This makes you deal with
    rejection or what comics call, dying not once but it
    could be all night. Let me tell you that is the worst
    feeling in the world. So you constantly are going back
    to the drawing board and coming up with ways to
    improve your product and in some cases coming up
    with a whole new product. Jay is the MASTER at this. I
    urge any salesman to go to an open mic night and get
    up on that stage, you?ll learn to sell and craft your
    words. I don?t know why some guru hasn?t taught this
    yet....ummm. Thanks for the read, I?m a Stand-Up and
    Voice Actor.

    Hasn't the ratings on his show tanked recently?

    I always preferred Letterman, until he got tired and old, and the amusing antics eventually turned into "We have actor X on tonight [who will be promoting their new movie], and band Y [who is promoting their new album]". Yawn.

    I just never found Leno particularly amusing. But it seems lots of people do (or did up until recently at least.)

    Jeeeeezuz.... Talk about letting the details get in the way of the point of the story. Mr. (Mongrel? Failure? Tanked?) Leno is earning a paltry $30million a year. Personally, I'm much more of a Letterman fan. And, not that we're discussing the overwhelming number of Late Night Talking Heads, but I was just recently making note of the "sameness" among all of them: Leno, Letterman, Conan, Fallon, Kimmel, Ferguson: Announcer, house band, theme song, curtain, comedy opening routine, boxy Q & A with guests, a few special features, close. Sounds a lot like my own typical day at work. I'm just earning a wee bit LE$$.

    I'm amused by those who slam Jay Leno. Regardless of whether you're a fan, he has made some great strategic moves. I'm sure many of us wouldn't be disappointed to be in his shoes and have the brand appeal that he has (and not to mention his financial assets). Being "exiled" to primetime isn't something to frown upon, especially when you have the potential to reach millions of "customers" -- anyone with an ounce of salesmanship should realize that.... The article is great -- mentions things that are core to the Golden Rule, regardless of your stature in society. Foresight combined with good old-fashioned courtesy, humility and friendliness is something that is sorely lacking in today's business world. The ability to build and sustain relationships at all levels can go a long way on the road to success.

    I've always appreciated Leno's humor -- and I thought the article was insightful.

    The comments blew me away! The reality is that for many of us if our current job goes away we will also end up on prime time working with an announcer ("Attention, K-Mart shoppers"), a band (playing musac) and a comedian (my boss the high school dropout).

    Per my grandmother, from all you do, from all you read, learn something and then apply it to your life.

    I've actually met Leno in person quite a few times...

    I run into Jay from time to time at sports car events and my friend is a production assistant on his show.

    Jay is a nice guy, but like all celebs, he really only has so much time to take any interest in people - much like information overload.

    He's got a solid show. It's on TV so it can't be THAT EDGY like a closed club.

    Thanks for the personal insight. I would be surprised if he tried to actually be the friend of everyone he meets. There's a limit, of course. The point is that he's polite and friendly. A "nice guy" as you say.

This is a cool vehicle for expressing/communicating/sharing/learning. What benefit is there to you, me, or any of the readers and particpants to bash our MC.     Easy to be on the critical side

    Jay has done a great job of 'Branding'. Like him or not, he
    stands out as an accomplished comedian. Best thing about
    Jay is that he is himself, how many people can say that they
    love their job everyday?

    I applaud him for his style and character, especially for his
    willing to buck the trend and be a car guy. We need more
    leaders that stand for what is good/ right for our world. I find
    his perspective refreshing (even if it doesn't tap into
    mainstream).

    Crikey! You fellas are acting like a pack of Drongos! That's right folks, I'm from Down Under, which means I'm not familiar with all the late night talk shows and hosts you refer to. Therefore, I read the 6 Tips without the bias - and generally speaking, they are all great pieces of advice we can all use...regardless of who delivered it. Personally, I don't find Jim Carey particularly funny, but he has made a name for himself making people laugh. However, read his story of how he reached his goal and fail to be impressed.

    Oh I wasn't implying in anyway that he IS a mongrel. I have just never been exposed to anyone that is successful and is a 100% nice guy 100% of the time. I love the fact that he is a nice guy but presumed that there must be another side to him.

    All the negatives i have read about Leno in the posts,i can only say,give him credit for what he is today.The very fact that we are discussing him today,makes him all the more centre of attraction,whether for right or wrong reasons.There are millions of geniuses who have not graduated beyond being geniuses and are not even known to their own neighbours and still living in penury.The way he has marketed himself is something for all of us to emulate and learn to create a brand image.Every human needs a brand image.A GOOD one.

    Yeah, it's ridiculous. Jay Leno could have retired years ago. So what if his new show isn't a big hit. Does anyone believe that he won't be able to fill an auditorium -- or have his own show -- any time he wants one? I'm sure that the people dinging him for his "failure" are pretty much the type who are always on the edge of moving back into their parent's basement.

    Amazing how someone may think Leno as a failure after all the success he has had.

    What is failure anyways? In my opinion failure doesn't even exist as long as you keep trying. The only failure is not to try.
