If you’ve read “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People,” you’ve probably guessed why I’ve been posting “motivational” videos every Sunday, like “Believe in Yourself” and “Elements of Greatness.” I believe that motivation is the foundation of success in just about any endeavor, but especially in sales.

If you’re going to be consistently motivated to succeed, I think it helps to understand the broader issue of motivation. For example, the entire mainspring of my personal motivation changed when I had children and I consequently think about work very differently than I did three years ago.

I thought it might be valuable to take a deeper look into how motivation works, so here’s Michael Norton, the founder of CanDoGo, explaining about the nature of motivation and how it needs to come out of a balanced life.

If you want some specific hints on how to stay motivated, you might want to check out one my most popular posts, Ten Ways to Get Insanely Motivated.

Full Disclosure: I write articles for the producer of this video, SellingPower magazine, which also has a distribution agreement with BNET for video content.

    RE: Video: Motivation in Selling

As the quote goes, "Those who do not learn from the past, are doomed to repeat it."

Analyize your successes and mistakes, and repeat what works for you. I try to treat every sales call as an independent event. Assume you are going to win, but prepare. Luck is the point where preparation meets opportunity. To stay motivated over the weekend, and make myself look forward to the next week, I try to schedule a call on Friday afternoon that I know is going to go well. The positive feeling from the appointment carries over into the weekend and my preparation for the next week.
