Three Beliefs that Cause Sales Failures

Failure

This blog often discusses how to succeed in sales. I thought it might be interesting to turn that idea around — and write about how to fail. After all, if you don’t know what causes failure, it will sneak up and bite you in the behind, sooner or later.

With that in mind, here are three very common beliefs, that ALWAYS create failure. Please note that these aren’t the beliefs that come out of your mouth; these are the beliefs that the little voice in your mind tells you when you’re feeling blue. Here they are:

  • FAILURE BELIEF #1. My self worth is based upon what others think. Some people define themselves based upon how they guess that their boss, their co-workers, their relatives and friends see them. Convinced that people think poorly of them, such people suffer from low self-esteem and lack of confidence.
  • FAILURE BELIEF #2. My past failures limit my future performance. Some people find failure so unpleasant that they try to avoid it at all costs. As a result, they avoid any situations where failure is a risk. Because any meaningful sales effort entails risk, such people seldom, if ever, accomplish anything significant.
  • FAILURE BELIEF #3. My destiny is controlled by the supernatural. Some people believe that their status in life and potential as a human being is determined by luck, fate or divine intervention operating upon the circumstances of their lives. This allows them to deflect the blame for failure and robs them of initiative.

I don’t think that you can believe any of these things and really be successful in sales. They come from a conversation I had recently with Omar Periu, a well-known motivational speaker. He’s big on building beliefs that make you more successful, as well as expunging the beliefs that cause you to fail.

    First 2: Excellent. My personal belief is that 80% of sales success (or failure) is an inside job, ie, whats in your head & probably at least as important, whats in your heart.

    Moreover, you cant "think" yourself into feeling good or doing well. You need to "act" yourself into feeling good and/or doing well.

    #3: If this belief system is set in a positive light, this can be a very good thing. The first 2 perpetuate the 3rd.

    Finally, as a good friend of mine likes to say, "God doesnt buy milk." In other words, its there, but you still need to go get it - its not going to be delivered to your door step.

    Rock on Omar you are right about the result, but what is the core problem? I believe that the three are deadly sins that can crush anyone, not just salespeople. We salespeople are not alone in our challenges of the mind or our environment. Each of these is the action of an active mind that assumes, presumes makes everything personal. These are the handicappers in this action, assume things means you know nothing about what is really happenig, or you would not assume..

    Presume, means you not only are assuming with no basis of fact, but you are going to take actions on this sandy foundation. Stop assuming and you will have to stop assuming.If you take things presonally you may believe others actually are keeping score of you and your life actions. No one is and you should not, but you can learn from your challenges, successes and failures...some smart person once said "Failure is one of the last stops to success."

    If we are thinking about what others think we need to stop thinking and start doing some things that we can control. Kabraham's friend has it righ, to this I would add that luck and success are earned thru determination, discipline,focused work,failures, others help and a willingness to make change...and stop Cheech and Chong from taking over your talking mindset.

    Failure may also be caused by inability to be "isolated". By that I mean you are prety much on your own in your daily routine. In Sales, a person works primarily on self reliance without a support system as you interact with a prospect which is really what happens when you are in selling mode. Being uncomfortable working this way will undermine a sales person.

    If you are really not that independent "trust, depend on and motivate yourself" kind of person, failure at sales is inevitable.

    I had to delve into my library to get my copy of A NEW GUIDE TO RATIONAL LIVING by Albert Ellis. I referred to it when I developed a training program on ASSERTIVE TRAINING. Ellis writes about 10 irrational ideas that lead to failure and neurosis.It was the beginning of RET - Rational- Emotive Therapy. It's even valuable for teaching children to deal with "bullies" and other obstacles in life. Donald Barbas, MBA
