Success in Sales

There are few really profound truths about selling, and fewer still are the people who know how to communicate them. One of these rare creatures is John Asher the CEO of the eponymous sales training firm. I interviewed John a few months ago — a fantastic conversation in which I learned a great deal.

However, the thing that really struck me from that coversation was what he called the “ten skills” that every sales rep must possess in order to reach the pinnacle of sales success. Here’s my (slightly reordered and edited) version of these skills:

  • Skill #1. Researching prospects and organizations prior to first contact.
  • Skill #2. Asking questions and listen more than you talk.
  • Skill #3. Focusing on a few top prospects and contacting them frequently.
  • Skill #4. Cultivating insider “coaches” to understand customer requirements.
  • Skill #5. Solving problems and overcoming objections as a consultant.
  • Skill #6. Creating long-term relationships with prospects and customers.
  • Skill #7. Communicating appropriate messages (e.g. value propositions).
  • Skill #8. Recognizing when the prospect is ready to buy.
  • Skill #9. Knowing how to close the sale when the time is right.
  • Skill #10. Getting referrals and then following up on them.

Readers: Is this a complete list? What other skills would you add?

UPDATE (7/2): Readers suggest some additional skills, which I’ve posted in “Ten MORE Top Sales Skills.

    Number 11

Another skill that needs to be included is the ability to qualify and recognize when a sale is not going to happen. In a business where results matter most, you can't afford to waste time.

    11th Skill?

Having supported some really good executive sales force members, I would add being able to communicate well and proactively with support staff. This includes getting vital information to the home office as soon as it's available, especially when deadlines are involved like in RFPs or open bids. Expressing appreciation for others that help make and close the sale makes all the difference when things get to crunch time.

I would add Appreciate your Customer. Don't forget to thank your customer. You can do this in a number of ways from a simple "Thank you" to a gift, a discount on future business, etc...

All relationships are founded on the base skill meeting people and building trust. Nobody becomes a true sales contact unless they believe that anything you put before them is valuable and useful. This comes through spending eneough time together to think that you are committed to anything you invest yourself in.

I agree with the 10 above and now the next question, how do you get this information out of a jobinterview with an apllicant.

Great advice, especially No. 2. Especially necessary if you haven't always done the other 9 perhaps as diligently as you should have!

    RE: Top Ten Sales Skills

I look primarily for three things when I hire sales people - guts and brains and drive. Anything else they have is a bonus. I take this approach because these are necessary attributes which I cannot teach them. Everything else they need I can teach them. I got into more depth on this at my blog:

Number 11 staying motivated. One of the best ways to do that is through the use of a vision board. A great example of that can be found with Unleash The Power Of Me. Take a look at what they are doing.
