In a previous post, I recently asked which celebrity or politician you’d hire for a sales job. At the time, I also asked the same question of three of the world’s top sales trainers. Here’s what they had to say:

I think the list is interesting, because there’s at least one politician on the list above that I would fire in a heartbeat. Anyone care to vote? Which of the three “candidates” above would be the best performer in a sales job?

Which politician makes the best salesman

Bill Clinton of course. He portaits someone who is on your side and is a good friend of yours. He is smart, bright and verbally talented. He is very knowledgeable but doesn't come across as someone who flaunts it.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, made his own opportunities, would be my choice of top sales person - The winner.

Rudy Gulliani, was presented with a very difficult situation and performed admirably - a "keeper."

    Bill Clinton - Lied. Fired.

Arnold would be the best hire. He is a self-made highly motivated man. He exudes confidence and he's believable.

Clinton might get hired given his amazing to lie without a hint of deception. In the end, he'd be canned when his lack of character is demonstrated.

Giuliani performed, as in, gave a stage show. Made us think he was in charge. But his explicit insistence on putting the emergency command center in Tower 7 of the WTC -- over repeated objections from people who knew better -- killed firefighters and others on 9/11. Talk about fatally poor judgment.

    RE: Politicians as Sales Reps

A politician can never separate himself from his personal ambitions and goals. If he finds value for himself in any non-political assignment, such as a Sales Rep, only then would he put his best efforts. We usually know that his best efforts are: at best 50:50! Internal politics ruin many organizations. Need we say more?

Bill Clinton. He listened, understood what his customers (American people)
wanted, and communicated his value proposition well. Guillani is too much "my
way or the highway" guy, counterproductive when teamwork is required to reach
sales and/or national goals. And Arnold?! Definitely charisma, but charisma only
gets you in the door; it doesn't close the sale.

Gulliani would never make it long-term as a sales person. The single most important character trait of a successful sales person is credibility. Check out Gulliani's record on gun control.... whether you or for or against gun control how can you trust some one who flips so easily and so obviously to get a "sale" (vote).

    RE: Politicians as Sales Reps

Clinton wins hands down. All sales reps lie, like it or not. Haven't you been reading Mr. James articles?

Arnold would be fired because of his accent and the fact that it is frequently difficult to understand him. It would be impossible for him to use "reflectioning".

I heard Rudy speak in person and have to say he captures your attention and tells you what you want to hear. Very effective!
