These days, PR firms need to do some extra care and feeding of their clients. Business may not be terrible, but lose a few clients you can’t replace because of the economy and you could be hurting.

So what steps can you take to create better, longer-lasting relationships with clients? PRSA’s online newsletter has some great tips, excerpted here:

  • Listen: don’t do all the talking
  • Understand their world: walk a mile in their shoes
  • Understand their fears
  • Use their language
  • Care about your clients (for real)
  • Be proactive
  • Become strategic
  • Change with them
  • Be the call your client wants to take
  • Articulate your standards
  • Create win-win situations
  • Go to them: get off the phone and visit them in person

    Darn good question.

    The key in those businesses, I think, is continuous focus on customer service and innovation. In other words, keeping a sharp focus on their needs rather than the needs of your business.
