What's Your Leadership Style?

Monday night, we said goodbye to our Leadership class in the form of a three-hour take-home final. It wasn’t my favorite way to wrap up a three-day weekend, that’s for sure.

But even more frustrating was the fact that I didn’t really take away too much from the class itself. Maybe it’s my journalism background, but I was hoping for some hands-on, practical advice about becoming a better leader. What I got was a bunch of theories.

As I was slogging through my essay exam, comparing and contrasting this theory with that, I started wondering, once again, how much leadership theory really matters. Do people sit around at work and decide to abandon the Situational Approach in favor of the Path-Goal Theory?

And so I thought I’d put it to you guys. After all, you’re the ones out there in the trenches, dealing with the day-to-day aspects of leadership, from performance reviews to hiring to disciplining.

Last week, I asked you about the real-world uses of Porter’s Five Forces, and I was glad to hear from you that, yes, you do use this methodology in your organization — and it does have a place in the real world. Reading your responses was very reassuring.

So, now I’m asking you another question: Those of you in leadership positions, do you rely on a specific leadership approach or theory, or do you have your own philosophy? Are leadership skills something you strive to improve, or do you focus on more tangible goals that are easier to measure?

    Currently, I can't say that I subscribe to any specific, documented leadership philosophy. I do strive to improve my leadership skills, but I'm more a fan of looking for independent tools than combined grand theories.

    There are so many leadership theories that give parts of a greater whole, and go to put the concepts in a box. Ultimately, the best leaders I've met and aspire to learn from, are experts in the blending of concepts to find the right way to lead different audiences. More often, in my experience, the audience and personality in play drive leadership style.

    You bring back.....memories of grad school. Lots of theory and models. As a
    senior leader I rarely meditated on theory or leadership models (although I did
    do this for my comprehensives!) Leadership today needs to be performance-
    based, behavioral and the learning steeped in best practice skill building.
    Leaders have integrity and demonstrate it every day. They develop others
    through coaching and skillful delegation. They also exhibit great courage and
    risk-taking; remarkable interpersonal skills (unlike the dinosaur stoic and
    exclusive financiers of yesteryear) provide clear expectations and help every
    person that is part of the organization understand his or her role in meeting
    the business goals/objectives. Leaders provide recognition to get high
    performance and skillful constructive feedback to get wayward performance
    back on track. They build trust. They attract great talent and do what it takes
    to keep that talent. Leaders readily admit their mistakes and they monitor
    their own destructive emotions. They celebrate successes and dish out the
    bad news with the skill of a good surgeon. Leaders leverage diversity into
    business results. They make their jobs look like fun....and most excellent
    leaders do just that...they incorporate FUN into work. Not making the
    standards lower or the outcomes diminished....they just know how to make
    you want to come to work every single day and perform at your highest
    levels. Few models and even fewer theories help us learn the skills and
    behaviors of meeting and exceeding our business goals. These goals require
    people! And the best model for leaders is to hone the skills of developing
    your talent and helping them succeed. Build your skill, build your people,
    move your business in the right direction. Be a leader!

    RE: What's Your Leadership Style?

    I am not sure if one can say that he or she follows a specific type of leadership style in taking decisions over any given situation. Each of the situations call for particular kind of style which needs to addressed as appropriately and it is wholly based on the audience whom you address the issue with.

    As such i do not think we can hook up to one specific kind of leadership style to handle all the situations that arise.

    Truly, though I have also taken the MBA Leadership class, so I could probably identify the style of leadership I come closest to, I agree with the person who said that the leadership style used depends upon the person(s)/situation. The class helped me identify areas where I could improve, but I feel that leadership is a personal, and often situational thing. I may think about how to approach an issue, but my thoughts usually center around the people involved and the criticality of the issue. I never think about whether I should use the "path-goal" model or some such.
