How Much is Getting in the Right Class Worth to You?

BNET’s Michael Mattis recently passed on an article to me about colleges that take getting into the right class to a whole new level (”Class Warfare: When Getting In Is the Hardest Part“). It seems some schools have enacted programs such as lotteries to help students get into highly popular classes.

For example, the Wharton business school at the University of Pennsylvania holds auctions for its MBA students to “buy” their way into the classes they want, using points instead of cash. It definitely would make registering for classes a bit more exciting, that’s for sure.

Lucky for me and my fellow MBA classmates, worrying about getting into the right class is something we left behind as undergrads. Since our two-year program is on a set schedule, we don’t even have to worry about registering. We’re all taking the same classes, and fighting your way in isn’t necessary.

Of course, it won’t always be this way. We have a number of electives in the program, which the class voted on a few months ago. We’re still waiting to hear the results, but it should be interesting to see which topics were most popular.

What do you think? Would you rather have a set schedule or choose your own courses for your MBA program? How far have you gone to get into the class you wanted?
