Middle managers may get ridiculed in pop culture – look at Dilbert, The Office, Office Space, but what is the truth about these people – are they victims, villains, or just plain essential to get work done? Bob Paul Osterman, Professor of Human Resources and Management at the MIT Sloan School of Management and author of The Truth About Middle Managers: Who They Are, How They Work, Why They Matter, discusses the identities of middle managers, and why they’re a group that no one pays enough attention to.

RE: The Truth About Middle Managers | HBR IdeaCast

I think this idea cast points out some crucial things. Most employees work directly for a middle or frontline manager. We worship the C suite, but it is these folks who really implement the strategy.
My approach has always been to develop these people. This is where the work gets done and they are the connective tissue that drives the implementation of the organizations culture rather than the rhetoric.
You can have brilliant executives, but if you have poor middle and front line management good luck implementing your strategy.
