The Hole in Obama's Leadership Style?

He delivers great speeches. He paints a vision. He can mediate, motivate, consensus build and compromise.

But what we don’t know is whether Barack Obama is tough enough to enforce the difficult decisions he is laying out for the country.

Leadership expert Michael Watkins, writing in his blog on Harvard Business Publishing, wonders whether Obama is really the best type of leader for a turnaround.

Watkins says his own research on power transitions shows that leaders entering a situation where storm clouds are still on the horizon requires a much different leadership style (the “steward”) than what is required in the Obama situation, where the storm has already broken (the “hero”).  Writes Watkins:

“In turnarounds, the situation demands heroism, by which I mean a visionary, charismatic, and often-highly directive form of leadership. Think of Shakespeare’s King Henry the Fifth at the Battle of Agincourt sprinting forward, sword in hand yelling, ‘Once more into the breech, dear friends.’ Think too of Henry’s willingness to execute the traitors who opposed him.”

Does that sound like the Obama style?  Watkins wonders.

“Does our new President have the heroism within him to force (yes force) the nation to swallow some very bitter medicine? Because he strikes me more as a steward than a hero. This is potentially a big problem because consensus-building-on-steroids simply isn’t going to cut it.”

Another look at Obama’s early challenges comes from Barbara Kellerman of the Harvard Kennedy School. While Watkins sees Henry the Fifth as role model for the current challenge, Kellerman thinks a master juggler might be a better analogy.

“The most obvious leadership skills President Obama will need to demonstrate are a sense of clarity and purpose, and the ability to sort through competing demands, both domestically and internationally. The multiplicity of decisions that he’s going to be required to make immediately is possibly unparalleled. So above all, he will be asked to be reasonably calm in the face of particularly critical and tense times. That suits him very well because he happens to have a calm nature, but at the same time he will need to convey a sense of urgency.”

As Obama rolls into the second week of his presidency, how do you think he is doing as a leader? Where is he strong, and where might his leadership style be lacking?

Obama's doing just fine. Actually, it will be said that it was the take-no-prisoner, autocratic style of rule (reflected in business leaders) that led to the global meltdown. We should always consider ourselves as stewards: stewards of the planet (fitting the elestic framework of the economy into the real and hard limits of the environment), and stewards of the generations that will follow us (giving them, especially if you're a Gen X or Y, a better situation than the one you had). The foresight of the typical "hero" can be measured in minutes - it's time we expected more from our leaders.

I think you hit the nail on the head with your last paragraph..."as Obama rolls into his second week". Give me a break. He is in his SECOND WEEK for gosh sakes. Nobody knows what is going to happen. We had two choices back in November. The article never discuses if John McCain was a better choice. I for one thought he wasn't; so did alot of other people. Mr. Watkins need to hold off on these kind of articles for a bit longer.

Oh and Mr. Silverthorne; it's President Obama, not Obama. I think he has earned it...

RE: The Hole in Obama?s Leadership Style?

So far Obama seems to be employing a combination of leadership styles:
    1) The Rodney King Leadership Style, "Can't We All Get Along", and

    2) The Berne Madoff Leadership Style, "Borrow and Spend"

Neither of these styles has worked very well in the past for very long. I wish him well, but I am standing clear of the area.

I love this guy.....he seems to have the listening skills and most importantly a good sense of the ultimate fairness in our society as well as a special interest in the world at large.
He has brought together the best minds that we seem to be able to gather.....he has moved with confidence...in the first week. He has to be very tired....who would want this job.
Fact is.....it is not up to him...as he has said over and over again...it is up to US. Yaaaaa, up to us....who can not see what a mess we have caused.....come on...get with it...and start figuring out how to live a modest life...those jobs are not coming back.....retrain to handle real needs nad exports to the world....the president will get there because he has a HEART.
I am an old man....and I can see Goodness when I see it.
Let's get behind the reality of revising the definition of quality of life.....that does not focus on Materialism...but has real elements of Human needs and desires it it.

Oh...and by the way....maybe we should be taking stock in our communities and determining if our little society are doing the INPORT/Export math...do we even know how to do it to know if we are moving up or down in small circles? We need to start in our back yard and then we will have a clue on how to do it at a national level.
This has to be done from the bottom UP and it has to be done by guess who...you and I. Don't expect the president to do hat tricks.
I love this guy and for the first time in my political involvement ...actually walked the streets for votes for this guy.
THE WORLD IS WATCHING AND HOPING FOR US TO DO GOOD THINGS AGAIN....LET'S GET CRACKIN!!!

RE: The Hole in Obama?s Leadership Style?

To me Obama seems to be more about trying to control people and outcomes, not decisive leadership.

Political gamesmanship can get you in the office, but he has to surround himself with people smarter than himself, and then make the call.

I just wish I saw more integrity in his choices for leadership. A tax evader to run the Treasury? What example is that setting?

To me that is poor leadership regardless of the position.

RE: The Hole in Obama?s Leadership Style?

President Obama's leadership style has not even begun to truly reveal itself. What we do know are the following facts:

He was politically savvy enough to muster and master all the important issues that the American Public and the World (actually) are crying to see addressed. So savvy in fact that he beat seasoned politicians of both the Democrats and Republicans to the point that they both conceded defeat in the elections (Party and National).

He is Gracious and astute enough to want to erase this whole partisan nonsense that has quagmired economy after economy in pettiness. President Obama seeks to (and will get) the bipartisanship that America has needed for so long to make really tough decisions for today and the future.

He is lowly enough to care about what happens to the future for his own children, and the children of the world. The issues around sustainable energy, less pollution and toxic emissions and the lowering of dependance on fossil fuels should have been tackled eons of years ago. The fact that finally we have a global leader who is willing to let the USA lead by example again (overtaking all the talk-shop policies of the Kyoto Protocol), where countries were getting frustrated even at the UN about the USA's reluctance to ratify the protocol and abide by the conditions contained in them. Finally the actions will cover up for the long, long delay during the Bush years (Senior and Junior) and part of the Bill Clinton years where getting the Hispanic and African votes were the biggest challenges to that Presidency despite having a VP who was doggedly tied to the effects of global warming and Ozone depletion.

Read the Inaugurattion speech again, and you will see a different leader from the campaign candidate start to emerge.
No tolerance of terrorism in the USA and anywhere else in the world. The tyrants of yester-year had better find a better place to do their tyranny.
Nations that seek to test the mettle of President Obama's character will be shocked to find that it is only by accident of birth that he happens to be black or indeed any other complexion. He is a Citizen of the World and can walk in the corridors of power almost anywhere, better than any other American President we have seen, read about or gotten to know.

The ability to carefully consider and craft a team of advisors and a cabinet that can deliver if all other things are held equal and constant. If the Bi-Partisanship can be allowed to prevail, if everyone understands that this is not a normal transition and it's not only the USA that is in turmoil, but the whole world. Allies that would normally have no problem partnering with the USA on matters of "The War on Terror" now have to contend with the reality of the grip of a recession (the UK is a case in point). So if Obama, despite that, can still muster their support in getting the world to turnaround, then he is the kind of leader that the world needs at this time.

Stewards......? What's wrong with stewards? The typical characteristics of a Steward are honesty, integrity, faithfullness, decency and charity. But over and above all these, there should also be Strength (of the steely type), the type that can force its way through difficult objections and circumstances. Case in Point is President Obama's acknowledgment of the fundamental philosophical differences between Himself, the House Democrats and the House Republicans. what matters though is what he articulated afterwards, that despite the differences, He Won. He is the President and he will prevail on this. If that does not give an indication of a bar of steel running up and down his spine and the fortitude to take hard decisions, then I don't know what will.

Do people want him to wage unnecessary wars in far-flung areas for them to see him as having the mettle to cut it, or do they respect a man that could choosed not to avoid war, but chooses the seldom-trod path of peace instead?

I agree that we still have a lot to learn about the Man behind the Presidency, but like another blogger wrote, "Give the man a chance... after all, this is only his SECOND WEEK". Thankfully, he also takes advice, so those who might have his Blackberry Smartphone number, please send him our encouragement and good wishes, so that he might continue to be a leader that inpires patriotism, gains the confidence of a nation and the world and has the moral integrity to excuse his being human and that we shall all make mistakes as we traverse this world, but lets us hold hands in doing so and remember the Old Negro Spiritual... "Free at last, Free at last, Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!!!"

RE: The Hole in Obama?s Leadership Style?

He's making all the wrong decisions out of the gate. He, and millions of other Americans, make the fatal mistake of believing that the government IS the economy. This fallacious mind set is digging us a hole that we won't be able to climb out of. We can't spend our way out of the debt and credit crisis'; we need austerity (and not austerity due to higher taxes!).

As for leadership, I follow one rule that I was taught long ago - would I follow this man or fight alongside this man in battle? The answer is a resounding no! He is a political animal through and through, a product of Chicago politics; he is not a leader by any definition. Unfortunate.

The really nice thing to see is all of these thoughtful responses. At the very least more people are getting involved in the economy, politics and the general running of the Country.

I am hopeful that President Obama can Lead us to turn the economy around. As always and especially in this situation the first 100 days of a Presidency is crucial, it is the best time to spark major changes and will set the stage for the rest of the term. I am very anxious to see what actions come out soon, we really do not have the luxury of talking about what to do back and forth for so long, we must act today. It is depressing to see 1,000 of more layoffs every day throughout the Country.

As for Leadership, like I said I am hopeful in the Presidents abilities. Though I am dissapointed that the title the first and one of the greates Presidents (George Washington) held "Commander and Chief" has lost its meaning...

I agree with timipierce74--it is really encouraging to see many thoughtful people engaging in this topic.

I think this is one thing you can definitely say about Obama's (Oops, Mr. Borland, I mean "President Obama's") leadership: He has gotten the American people engaged in politics in a way I haven't seen, well, I can't remember when.

I disgree with several comments along the lines that it's too early to say anything definitive about the President's leadership effectiveness. He has actually been at this job since election day!

President Obama will do just fine, provided he keeps the business experts in check.

President Obama has hit the ground running already in performing his executive functions. He has proved to be a good leader and he has chosen a very good Chief of Staff in Rahms Emmanuel who appears to complement President Obama's leadership style of the NICE GUY, while Rahms could be the NASTY one who wields the Presidential executive stick to get all the Obama agenda goals, objectives and tergets ACTIONED efficiently. Obama is lready proving our concept of LEADAGEMENT right, which is the balancing of Leadership and Management systems for better executive performance. It solves the perennial predicament of Why Managers Cant Lead and Leaders Cant Manage (www.lulu.com)
There is no hole in President Obama's Leadagement, ( Leadership- Management)style.

RE: The Hole in Obama?s Leadership Style?

A hole in the President's style? First i agree with Michael Borland - this is HIS SECOND WEEK for gosh sake!

Has he announced a salary freeze for his staff? Yes. Has he put a stop to out-of-control lobbying practices? Yes. Has he surrounded himself with very strong-willed (and sometimes opinionated) people? Yes. Has he constantly told American people that the bullet will have to be bitten in these hard times? Yes. Yet Mr. Silverton says that the Prez may not have steel.

Maybe Mr. Silverton(i am a Nigerian and our Politicans still live in the dark ages) is so used to the "roll into town and blast 'em wiv sixguns" style of the last eight years that he can't relate to true greatness when he sees it. A lot of you are just waiting to blow up the Prez's mistakes when he does make them - as if he is not a human taking on probably the toughest job on earth right now.

I followed President Obama's campaign and listened to his speech. I see a man smart enough to listen and tough enough to cut you out of the herd if you dont shape up (remember Rev Jeremiah?). He is tough enough to do what is needed.

I believe it is too early to tell! However, it would have been nice to have an experienced leader to hold the most powerful position in the world. We really didn't have the option in this election to pick such an individual. Still I stand behind President Obama and am hopeful he can quickly learn to be the leader WE NEED while holding the most important job ever!

Obama has already defied conventional wisdom by the
virtue of winning the Presidency. I am suspect of any
'expert' who believe he must follow some historical
pattern to be successful. The strong willed leader is a
characteristic that was required for a less sophisticated
time, for instance negative campaigning. With
considerable more effort from a leader, the rules of
    history can change.

I would not consider Henry V a great leader. See http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/british/middle_ages/henry_v_01.shtml Henry V took in England into an overseas war on deceitful grounds (his claim to the French throne was rubbish) and left England seriously weakened economically and militarily. Gosh this reminds me of a recently retired US President.

The new president is being true to what he said was most valuable. He has repeatedly referenced Lincoln and how he built his inner circle as those best qualified for the task. He has done this and like Lincoln trusts himself to be the final rightness voice of the decision made. President Obama also promised transparency. He has done this as well. If there is a hole in his leadership style it is that he has set for himself and the country a new standard of responsibility that is foreign to business as usual. Give him time and watch how the established powers react. it is far too early to judge or guess what may or may not unfold.

RE: The Hole in Obama?s Leadership Style?

My biggest problem with the current administration is the expansion of government. Suddenly the federal government is controlling everything from healthcare to General Motors to the BCS Coaches Poll.

It was the government who mandated home loans to people with no credit and no down payment. Ultimately, this is what caused the housing market to spiral out of control and eventually crash. The government wasted no time blaming Wall Street.

It is the government who imposes high taxes causing business owners to go elsewhere.

The idea that government workers - people who essentially can't get fired for anything - can manage my life better than I can is absurd.

Unfortunately, people are so caught up in emotional rhetoric, they fail to see the danger of unlimited government expansion.

Obama is trying to accomplish too much at once. This has nothing to do with multi-tasking, it has to do with prioritizing and putting all "guns" on the most serious problem(s) first. Instead, he is using the financial crisis as an opportunity to implement all his socialist agenda items too. This weakens his efforts as there will be unintended side-effects using this methodology. All of this speaks volumes to his inexperience of "running" ANYTHING up to this point. He does not have the knowledge nor experienced of a seasoned CEO, State Governor, or even large city Mayor that has had to deal with these types of problems on a regular basis - hence the shotgun approach. If he continues with his current approach, I'll give him a year, at which time his positive ratings will be worse then George W. Bush's ever were.

Good luck with all of that.

RE: The Hole in Obama?s Leadership Style?

'Obama' and 'leadership' are mutually exclusive terms. He is an unmitigated disaster and if not removed very soon, will turn out to be America's fatal mistake.

He has ushered in the most anti-business administration Americans have ever seen; and it is shattering confidence on world markets. That's not leadership, that's just political thuggery. AIG, GM, Chrysler, cowtowing to unions, ACORN, corruption of the electoral process, campaign contributions from foreign sources, and all the rest add up to a brewing tyranny borne more of a serious and deeply-rooted anti-America pathology rather than any political ideology.

Another demonstration of his brand of 'leadership' is his repeated denegration of America and American values to audiences on the very continent we saved in two world wars. Ditto for his abandonment of Israel; a serious miscalculation.

Obama is not a leader, he is a facade.

RE: The Hole in Obama?s Leadership Style?

I agree with the last 3 posts. Personally, I had thought President Obama would have been a little more moderate in his policies and an independent thinker. However, I never saw him as a leader. Obama owes way to many favors to the special interest groups and lobbyists to ever be a true leader. I think the country was fooled by his rhetoric and calm demeanor. I find that many make the assumption that persons with this kind of ability are de facto leaders, they are not. I have yet to see President Obama handle a difficult situation with conviction and honesty. It is just the same old story. Until this country wakes up and realizes that we have been fooled again.. we will continue in the downward spiral. I hope one day we will have a real "leader" but that will only come when people cease to be lemmings and think for themselves rather than be bought out by lobbyists, transnational corporations and Hollywood buffoons!
