Boomers: The Worst Generation?

My posts about generational change in the workforce tend to draw a lot of readership. Nothing to do with my brilliant writing skills, mind you; people just seem naturally drawn to the topic.

So I’m reading comments on a recent post, Generation X Is Now In Charge, when I drop my bottle of Geritol upon reading this comment by “myatuski”:

“Gen X. the generation raised by the worst generation in history up to date (I know I am one of them so do not get offended)- boomers. Just another step in decline towards the sewer for our ones great civilization.”

Ouch! Damn it, myatuski, that hurt! Boomers put a man on the moon! Oh, wait, that was the previous generation. But we were the first generation to identify global warming as a real threat, even if we didn’t do much about it — do we have to do EVERYTHING? Hey, there were no “world wars” under our watch, something the so-called “Greatest Generation” can’t claim.

And my God! The Internet. We did that, too. The Mac/iPhone/iPod/iTunes? Yup. Steve Jobs is boomster material.  “Seinfeld”, DNA sequencing, those cute little Mars rovers. That’s us, dude! I’m not sure about the Beatles and the Stones, but I’m throwing them in the Boomer Basket. Joe Montana, Haight-Ashbury, Stephen Sondheim, “Vanity Fair”, Oprah, J.K. Rowling, and Bollywood, too. Killer asteroids. Flat organizations. Hip replacements. The dorgi.

Maybe the subprime crisis wasn’t our shining moment. But for every Madoff we have a Madden! Whatchyougot, Xers, Yers? Geocahing? Lindsay/Paris?

Boomers the worst generation?  There has to be a generation worse than us.

Right?

    RE: Boomers: The Worst Generation?

I take exception to the term the "worst generation". Being on the tag end of the Boomer Generation, I think it depended on where in the country you came from. There are a lot of responsible, empathetic "silent" individuals in this generation that have raised responsible, and caring young people who know what is important. I have read a number of comments from the generation behind us who are exceptionally materialistic and blame us. or want to push us out of the way.. Why! We aren't necessarily the ones who told you to put yourself in debt beyond your means. I was one who put my career on hold to stay home and raise my kids and didn't miss a thing. The most important thing is: to leave a legacy that you can be proud of for the people that we love, to show your children what hard work accomplishes and taking responsibility for yourself. Stop winding yourself up about what you don't have and have patience like the rest of us. Appreciate the small things that give you pleasure rather than the newest toy and a more expensive house...

Sorry Sean. I disagree with you. If myatuski says that his parents did a poor job, I believe him... He ought to know!

I am a Gen Yer and I think it doesn't matter how we were raised or what not. But I think that it is really up to an individual to make that choice. ARE YOU GOING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE OR NOT?

If theres one thing I read before about our generation is we are passionate ones but it really won't be the generation that will determine that but the individual choice of making things happen by all means.

    RE: Boomers: The Worst Generation?

I happen to agree with this assessment.I have said it for years, but have gotten arguements from my friends and aquaintances. Of course there are exceptions to the rul, such a insideoutjoni, macquid, myself and others. I call the 'Baby-Boomer' genation the me generation. Unlike many of their parents and grand-parents the boomers for the most part, no matter their origin in this country, did not want to make sacrifices for their children or others. Yes there are some who believed in the humanistic side and gave to charities, people in need after they got to where they wanted to get, such as Bill Gates and others. However, they stepped on any body in their way to the top. Just look at most of the CEOs of today. Most are 'Baby-Boomers' and their ethical practices are very questionable. There are more scandals than ever before for corporate America. It almost sounds like the late 19th and early 20th century elites that caused other necessary evils of their day , UNIONS. Caring executives are scarce. They forget their sucess was executed by the masses of personnel not in the executive elite class.
Ther offspring (the X generation) has not proved to be any better. It is still the one with the most toys wins attitude. Hopefully the y-genaration will turn things around.

I agree -- I tell my daughter not to spare the bullet when it comes to getting rid of us.

The 'Me" generation is self-involved, indulgent, unaccountable, lazy, entitled, drug-addicted, demented by religion, wasteful, and utterly narcissistic. I know, because they are my neighbors, friends and peers.

    Stardust and golden -- baloney!

We leave a legacy of squandered resources ? no one will miss us when we are gone.

    RE: Boomers: The Worst Generation?

We too often look at the exceptional events and persons of a generation and lump everyone from that generation in with them. But I can't take credit for the internet, the iPhone or any other major development during my time on earth. I take advantage of those things created by the exceptional from this and past generations, but I didn't invent a thing. Each generation has a zeitgeist I guess, a way of acting and being collectively, but we can't paint all members with the same brush. Each period of history has its good and bad. Unless you actually took part in the events and played a pivotal role you can neither take credit nor blame for either the good or bad. My point..the generational argument is weak and best left to those who need to generalize so they don't have to think. Peace!

    RE: Boomers: The Worst Generation?

By definition, those that raised the worst generation cannot be the greatest.

Sean you are so lame and misguided! There were no wars on the worst generation's watch because you covered your eyes with rose colored glasses (literally), grew hair over your ears, filled your noses with coke and lungs with pot. You were so stuffed full of $H!X it is no wonder you continue to spew it.

I'm ashamed to be Irish...change your name you piece of $H!X.
