LinkedIn: The Business Antidote to Facebook?

Expanding on yesterday’s blog on the diminishing ROI for business users of Facebook, Harvard Business Online blogger John Sviokla  checks in with a positive look at its main competitor for business users, LinkedIn.

His take: LinkedIn delivers tremendous reach to business professionals for a relatively small investment. Says Sviokla:

“I have personally found it useful for recruiting, business development, and research. How much do you need to pay to get access to over 25,000,000 professionals? Does $7,000/month sound reasonable? That’s what you can buy from LinkedIn.”

And it’s not just contacts and business prospects you connect with. Sviokla values the ability to tap into domain experts to help him solve problems. Read his post for more concrete examples on the benefits of LinkedIn

    Linked In - A Necessity

    There is no doubt that Linked In has reached critical mass in the tech business community. It is the first place I look for contact information on an individual. I use it to review an individual?s backup before, and after, meetings with vendors and partners. In fact, it's difficult to go for more than 3 hours in a business day with out finding a need to access Linked In for professional input (through questions/answers) or just contact information.

    I prefer LinkedIn for professional contacts because everyone on that site is there to network. Although Facebook is expanding its horizons and are encouraging businesses to use its site, I feel it's very spammy. The business profile I have for Salesconx has a lot of "friends," but we have not done much business with them. Our LinkedIn presence, however, has helped us gain extra traffic and members just by link placement, staying engaged, and answering questions on the forum.

    Salesconx is actually similar to LinkedIn, but instead of just adding people to a network, our users are purchasing and selling quality contacts with each other through our marketplace. I wouldn't call ourselves a "social network," but we are definitely changing the way people network with one another.

    I agree that Linkedin is fully adequate and very useful networking tool for business relations and developing new sphere of influence either as a private person or someone working for a national or international corporation.I use both, Linkedin and Facebook but I feel that Facebook has a younger audience and clientele with more social outreach needs but some of the innovative ways of Facebook can be excelent tools for business networks as Linkedin. I also use a British networking group that is also growing: ecademy.com but in order to use all the benefits you have to pay a year membership and I feel that with Linkedin or Facebook you have better outreach than ecademy.com without paying a fee. Older clouds of people on the web like me (I am 56 year old) need friendlier technology access as we are not very savvy for using Video, Photo, Chat and voice communication among other new ways of reaching new friends and instant messages on the web. WE want to learn and we do are best effort to be on the tech edge but it is not so easy. Hope all these networks can develop better ways to teach in a friendly way without the need to become "techies" or study hard to keep our skills with new innovations as I-Phone and other Cell phone devises. An extra issue will be how to integrate less technological advance countries and regions, and even less savvy or educated populations even in countries as the USA and Western Europe. and Very clearly in countries of latin America, Africa and Asia

    Social networking context is key

    While both Linkedin and Facebook have functions/features that can be leveraged in a business context Linkedin is the clear winner for this purpose. By defining a business context for feature use on Linkedin the "signal to noise" ratio is dramatically reduced on the site greatly increasing its effectiveness for this defined purpose.

    Business can still take advantage of Facebook (advertising, commercial pages) however it is more a medium to commerce versus an enabling tool of commerce.

    I prefer Linkin to Facebook as it is primarily for business use. Running a business I need to use my time as efficiently as possible and thats where LinkedIn excels. I been able to cultivate new business relationships, re-establish old ones and even found a few long lost friends.
