Corporate Makeover: Let’s Do Away With TitlesIn the 20th century hierarchical business organization, titles serve two purposes. For employees, a name tag with Vice President on it marks your ascension through the ranks. The second service titles provide is to tell fellow workers and customers who has power to make things happen.

Question: Are titles still relevant as we start to reinvent the organization in the 21st century?

Tammy Erickson believes titles have developed too much corporate baggage and its time to switch to a different system.

Writing on Harvard Online, Erickson says workers in the modern org want new challenges, not new titles; they want to be able to move laterally or even backwards to where the most interesting work is, not necessarily upward and onward toward the C-suite.

“I suggest we define names for tasks, but recognize that individuals will move from task to task, without carrying an organizational title on their backs,” Erickson writes.

This couples with an earlier idea she put forward that we define jobs and compensation by what we do, not how many hours we put in.

Read her post for an interesting view of the 21st century corporation, which she believes is changing shape from a hierarchical triangle to a collaboration-enhancing rectangle.

    Let's Do Away with Titles

    The idea of a collaborative organization has been around for decades and I have yet to see an organization that does it effectively (although the number professing to do it are legion).

    Titles are everywhere and we are almost hard wired to seek them out as we look for clues about who can help or harm us in our efforts. Experience in an organization that replaced traditional titles (Manager) with something less obvious (Customer Champion/Team Ambassador) resulted in endless conversations about authority/responsibility: "So if there is a problem with xxxx are you the person I go?" It also generated a need for two sets of business cards, with those given to customers/vendors/outsiders in general having traditional titles.

    Doing away with titles is the equivalent of children playing sports without keeping score. Parents can preach that everyone played their best and that's all that matters...but every child knows who won and who lost.

    A more difficult fix, but one with more meaningful outcomes is to change the behaviors of people with the titles.

    I agree completely. Knowledge and skills of what and how to do to satisfy customers are much more important and titles. And while you are at it, do away with merit systems and performance appraisals. Manage the company as a system. Optimize the system not components within.

    I too agree. I have known lots of people who have moved laterally/backwards depending on the work. Besides, with globalizations each place associates different meaning to a title. For instance, AVP in certain developing countries like India is a glorified title with very little power unlike in other more developed nations. This means, we cannot rely on the title anyways and probably time we did away with it.
