Robert Kaplan and David Norton, creators of the “Balanced Scorecard” corporate measurement system, have been dubbed official  management gurus by economist.com.

“The two men started with the premise that what you measure is what you get,” according to the publication. “Measure financial results and you get financial results. Measure things like innovation and customer satisfaction and you will get those too.”

Kaplan is a professor at Harvard Business School, Norton a consultant and founder of Renaissance Solutions.

Kaplan joins other HBS faculty on the Guru list including Michael Porter, Rosabeth Moss Kanter, and Ted Levitt.

RE: Balanced Scorecard Gurus Now Official Gurus

While the Balanced Scorecard is a vaulable tool, credit may also be referenced to the Baldriged Criteria for Performance Excellence.

I understand Baldrige is thought to have been an extended predecessor to the Balanced Scorecard and I find both of useful management tools.

It would be interesting to hear from the founders what kind, if any influence it had on their final model.

Balanced Scorecard Looks at Four Areas

    The Gartner Quadrant
    The Balanced Scorecard
    The Four Seasons
    The Four Majors (golf)

    We really love fours.

Did you know that Gartner is not even at Gartner anymore. His Gartner Quadrant is bigger than he is.

Sometimes the PR and marketing are as much of the success as the core solution behind it.

Balanced Scorecard is a methodology. It works OK, but the front line employee doesn't really get to eat, sleep, and breathe the scorecard during his or her work.

If you are running a bank, you might get by with just financial metrics, but everybody else needs more to run the store.

I don't know of a better method that is well known, but it shows how powerful a system like balanced scorecard can be. It is understandable, it is better than what we had before, and it is transportable.

Let us not think it is perfect or even sufficient, but let us be thankful we have it.
