Our poll on how to handle a partner who takes a big gamble on your business has generated some mixed responses, with no clear winner. When you bring personal relationships into starting a business, it appears the old “stick to the deal, no matter how painful it is to the loser” becomes a little grayed. Should it? Is this a fundamental problem with starting a company with a friend?

So what do you think about the idea of going into business with friends? Is it a good idea because you already know each others strengths and weaknesses? Or is a bad-idea because personal relationships can get messy in the cut-throat business world?

What do you think about starting a business with friends?

    Business is Business

There is nothing wrong with going into business with a friend. Its the same as a family business. You have to have clear understanding that business is business, and some business decisions are hard to make. You won't agree all the time, you won't like some of the decisions made-- accept that going in. Spend time upfront in open candid discussion. You'll still be hurt and angry when you disagree-- but you will know the ground rules and hopefully get over it and move on.
