Your dilemma: One year ago, your company hired a new vice-president to oversee recruitment and implement a minority hiring initiative. Since then, minorities have accounted for about 40 percent of new hires, though they represent only 20 percent of applicants, and some long-time employees are whispering that better qualified candidates are being overlooked in the push.

Your job is to do a review of the minority hiring initiative.

What's your general assessment based on these facts?

Unfair hiring practices? I don't think so!

Let's see -- 40% in one year? How far does that go in redressing the imbalances resulting from years of discrimination?

As for qualifications - the interview and hiring process being what it is, who can fairly judge this? The process is generally so subjective, that I would be looking to quell the whispering campaign, rather than changing the process.

Let time judge whether the hirees are qualified by judging on-the-job performance.

    RE: Minority Hiring

People will always whisper. Some of those people whispering are minorities also. The problem is YOUR question. What makes you think out of that 20% the 40% are not the right people for the job? If profits tripled would this even be a question. Change starts with YOU, examine your own questions, before you seek answers.

    RE: Minority Hiring

Do your job -- perform an impartial and fair review of the situation! You're worried about the whispers - there will always be whispers! Prepare an analysis based on fact; look at the credentials of the those that were hired in relation to skillset(s) required for the position. Look at the total person and then decide if this is the right person for the job!

Compare Status Before and After VP Hired

What was the mandate to VP? Did she/he realize there were workforce inequities or was the mandate to specific? Based upon what we are told the process worked. If teh 40% minority hiring brings teh firm in-line with community/regional demographics it looks like a successs. But if the hiring practices bring teh workforce to a higher level of minority representation that may not be all bad, especially if quality contributors are hired. Finally, whispers are just that - gutless and not willing to address teh isse head-on with managemtn in a productive way. They will always be there.

    RE: Minority Hiring

I think that is possitive to hire minorities to have balance, however is more important for a company to hire based on results, experience, knowledge instead race.

    RE: Minority Hiring

Hmmm. Aside from a civil war and countless deaths, including MLK, to achieve "a person should be judged by his character not by the color of his skin", we now legalize racial discrimination.

    Leagal Discrimination?

Legalize Racial Discrimination??? I agree with the civil war and countless deaths but should not look at the best person for the job regardless of race (or sex, sexual orientation, etc)? Obviously people will hire who they like and they may discrimante regardless of the legality of the hiring. These we need to ferret out and deal with accordingly.

    Not enough info...

Race and sex discrimination has been legal in America for centuries...just not against white males. Those that know discrimination when they see it generally do not define a remedial action as a form of discrimination.

First: The size of the company isn't mentioned. If this is a large company, they may have a lot of catching up to do to bring minorities to some reasonable level of representation. There's nothing in the scenario to indicate the demographic composition of the organization, so the impact of 40% of the new hires may be a pittance compared to hundreds or even thousands of whites hired based on prior preferential treatment.

Second: Its unlikely that anyone was "whispering" about unfair hiring practices and better qualified candidates while only whites were being hired as the preferred racial profile. Unless they were in the interviews, no one can say who was better qualified. If the finalists were equally qualified and candidates of color were chosen as the preference to meet goals, congrats to the hiring managers and to the company's leadership.

Third: Don't fret over this scenario. Its highly unlikely.

    RE: Minority Hiring

Why is the devil sitting on top of the coffee pot? Does this imply that coffee (something black) is bad and the water (clear/white) is good? Hmmmmm.....

This above was sarcasm but can be useful in the above debate and how far things can be taken.
