Yes, that’s right. Peter Drucker said, “the purpose of a business is to create and keep a customer”, and much of that work happens smack-dab in the middle of companies.

Sorry CEO’s. We know the last few years have been tough with all of the scandals and talk about excessive pay. Now, just when you’re starting to feel good again, we’re throwing this at you. While it doesn’t seem fair, stick with us for a minute and you’ll see how we can all benefit. And don’t worry….nobody is suggesting that you can’t keep the town car or fly the corporate jet.

Now, ten solid reasons why You — Managing in the Middle — Are More Valuable than Your Company’s CEO:

  • You know how stuff really gets done. Let’s face it, process maps mean very little when you know that to get your PC up and running again, the fastest route is to buy a muffin for Oscar in IT.
  • You know what motivates individuals. You’re with them every day. Sometimes it’s cash, time off for a kid’s event, or just some simple recognition. Whatever the case, you’re in a position to help motivate both in- and extrinsically more than anyone else.
  • You know the customer well enough to get to the truth. You are them, they are you, and there’s a symbiotic bond. More than anyone, the customer will tell you exactly what they need and how to sell to them.
  • You know the vendors as well as the competitive landscape. All that shooting the bull with Marvin, who supplies the whole industry, really pays off when he tells you that your biggest competitor is never going to get that new launch off the line. With some tweaks, your firm can make a killing!
  • You don’t have to defend the original strategy. This is BIG! Since you didn’t devise the strategy, you aren’t obligated to defend it. Instead you can speak openly and tell it like it is. Do tell brothers and sisters…do tell!
  • You have the skills to get people of diverse backgrounds and in cross functional groups to work together. That’s because you live with them every day. There’s a big difference between telling people what to do and really working it out. You know how to work it out.
  • You know exactly what point your company is in the movie. You’ve been living it with the team, and more than anyone else you know if the team is ready to take the hill or go back and lick its wounds.
  • You know the believers. When the team needs to get motivated, you know who they turn to, and more importantly, you know what gets them fired up.
  • You can motivate with humor. You’ve got their trust; therefore you can joke a bit and have some fun. Fun is a great motivator, and you’re the one best positioned to get them laughing.
  • You have the power to heal. When things go wrong you’re best positioned to get people on the path to recovery with a vision for the future.

So why do we need you, Mr. CEO? Well…you’ve done one heck of a job getting people and money in the right place. Hats off to you for that! When it comes down to it, dealing with regulations, reporting issues and testifying before congress doesn’t seem like much fun either… so thanks for that as well.

In a business world where everything is changing overnight and entire industries are being reshaped: from Manufacturing to Music, Transportation to Telecom, it’s quite likely that the next great business model won’t come from you but rather from us, the middle person.

So let’s make a deal right now. You CEO’s keep doing what you’re doing and we’ll be out of your hair, but when it comes to strategy, policy, employee recognition, and benefits we’d like to be in on that conversation. Deal?
Best,
Vince

Yes, majority are hardworking and take a lot from the above and quite often from their reports as well. A lot of times they carry the objectives into reality.. and not all well recognized and rewarded for a lot of work.

Excellent article for middle management group as well CEOs and also all Emolyees in any one
Organisation. Some employees do not know who is the CEO till they retire. There I always found polarisation in companies just simply because of EGO.All employees somehow interrelated for the betterment of any organisation. If a CEO has no time for his own employees he or she is not suitable for the Job. The mindset of all CEOs in this Planet has got to change for the betterment of Humanity.

Gee - I thought the same when I was a middle manager - but shareholders, analysts, directors, and investment bankers don't listen to middle managers - and most vendors won't give concessions unless volume commitments are made by CEOs. So, if you act on what you know - you'll be promoted to CEO and be doomed to read inane articles like this one that tell you your middle managers are more valuable........

Middle Managers are the hands-on people, they know the tiniest details in the operations of their respective department but CEOs see the Macro-picture of the company. He sees and knows the figures and puts everything together, he may not know how a check voucher nor a bill of lading looks like but he sure knows who to call when he needs to things explained. That makes him - the CEO.

Excellent article and interesting thoughts and point of views from all the responders!!!

For a long time I've been a middle and low - payed - I would say manager - but in fact I was as an employee..

The truth is that didn't bother me the "employee" thing as much as the "middle manager"..with no power or rights for evolution!!
A long time ago, I made my move...for good..with great respect for the middle managers and the employees of mine!!!

What a pity the author doesn't know basic English. The title should read "10 Reasons Why You...Managing in the Middle...are More Valuable than Your Company's CEO". Personally I find illiteracy far more depressing than anything my CEO could do.

Nice one Vince - but we are talking "Leadership & Culture" here rather than "management" - anyone can design a strategy, set targets and monitor results, but to create that sense of direction, communicate the vision, energise, inspire and motivate people - that takes real skill - and as observers, what does it matter whether these attributes come from the top, middle or bottom of the management structure?

Call me persnickety, but I cannot believe that the title made it to publication as is - it has a grammatical error - "Reasons" in this context is not possessive!

OK - so I just went back and read the thing and it's chock full of errors. Maybe it's just me, but I find that a total distraction from the message, which was probably useful, in addition to the value of a "how not to be grammatically correct" demonstration......

Very valid points in this article that many of us agree with because we've witnessed it in our own companies. Kumar549 hit the mark with "If a CEO has no time for his own employees he or she is not suitable for the Job"; this will alienate your supporting staff quicker than anything I've seen. This is where the middle management can and will do what it takes to keep things rolling - at least until they either burn out and move on or actually get recognition that's well deserved.

RE: 10 Reason???s Why You???Managing in the Middle???are More Valuable than Your Companies CEO!

i guess by and large it's stating the obvious. CEO's are hired to run organisations and they'll obvoiusly need people down the ladder to push the organisation's agenda. Middle managers are paid to do exactly what they do - giving the necessary support to top management. once the CEO bears the utmost responsibility what do you expect? they should get the best of recognition when things are going well and the best of "hammering" when things are not going well and not the middle manager.

RE: 10 Reason???s Why You???Managing in the Middle???are More Valuable than Your

First off, so sorry about the misspellings and grammatical errors. You're right..that's lame on my part and not fair to the reader. I'll be better next time.

Next up...thanks for each and every comment. Middle Managers rarely do get a voice and the frustration is well earned. Key to getting our own business and careers on track is doing what we do best and I hope started the conversation on that track.

As for CEO's...Hat's off to them....we've interviewed some real superstars on Dog and Pony and many have learned the secrets of success and innovation by working in the mid levels. My hope is that the new breed of leader doesn't forget the valuable middle layer and the warriors there who are fighting the create the future.

    Thanks Again.

    Best-

    Vince T.

Hey to all who is making all that noise as to the negativity of this article!- give the guy a break!.. we all are bound to make occational grammatical mistakes. However its true though one must take additional care when doing an article as these have the power of eliminating or at least undermining the message , which does justice neither to the writer nor the "knowledge hungry" reader...what i mean is after all this is not targeted at teenagers..so lets spell out the negatives in a professional manner and try' n appreciate the message ha..please? of course alternate opinions or challenging the message is an interesting topic and is the right of the reader..

Many seem to be ignoring or missing the fact that for an organization to be succesfull it requires staff at all levels who are paid for exactly what they do (or dont do). Some levels in the organization might think they are more inportant than others however, each relies on the other to achieve the objectives of the company e.g without the lower level staff there would be no need for a middle level manager? Anyway, what I do think is that we as middle managers dont get enough decision making "authority" from the CEO. If we did, I am certain we would be able to achieve more & have more motivated workers.

RE: 10 Reason???s Why You???Managing in the Middle???are More Valuable than Your Companies CEO!

Hmm. Easy to think it's the guys at the middle that keep things going....(I am there in that position, anyway). But the direction, leadership, motivation and resource generation that the CEOs provide are actually what position the company and drive the middle managers like us to equally do what we are able to do. Again, they ward off the 'predators' called investors and external stakeholders through public relations job, and so doing provide the right atmosphere we need to work in. And don't forget they once occupied the positions we are now, so they have those skills and are applying them at macro level. Certainly, a disorriented CEO will have many of his middle managers disoriented. Fact is, a good CEO knows who to keep as middle managers so he can pursue his own job, because he has the experience on the stuff you are offering, somehow. And they mentor us directly or indirectly - so even when we deliver they still have some credit....

RE: 10 Reason???s Why You???Managing in the Middle???are More Valuable than Your Companies CEO!

This article should be entitled, 10 reasons why the Middle Manager should be more valuable than the CEO, but most of them are not.
If Middle Managers listened to and supported the needs of their workforce then they would be as valuable as a CEO who listened to and supported the needs of his Middle Managers.
Unfortunately most managers spend their time looking upwards, trying to work out how to impress their immediate superior, and never interact with their workforce except to tell them what to do.
Managers seldom spend any time trying to figure out what their workforce really need to do their jobs.
If they did then they would be much more than ten times as valuable than their CEO's.

The situation to me is like that of an Army General and his troops. Their roles are clearly defined and both are mutually supportive. Some really good soldiers lack the essentials of tactics and strategy, while most generals lack the physical capacity to run down enemy troops.Without a visionary CEO the middle manager is likely to walk into an ambush or loose track of his mission.Mush as i concede to the critical role the middle manager plays,i still retain respect for the more essential role of the CEO.Good article though!

RE: 10 Reasons Why You???Managing in the Middle???are More Valuable than Your Companies CEO!

Its very interesting what you have pointed out by thegent_007. We must not forget that most if not everything about leadership, strategy and management have origins from the Army, and as such is, the Army, a very good point of reference.
I think we should compare likes with likes and not mingle out everything to get something that seems interesting with no real meaning. By definition, Middle managers are at the tactical level in the organisation. If you are going to just laud about the advantages of the being at the tactical level. Then of course the maanager will turn to be more valuable, which is definitely not the case. Since you have not ventured into the arena of the CEO. If you do not have the proper goal and vision to keep the company going and thrive, then, i should say, that you, managers, would have worked for nothing, when the organisation closes down. Or when it changes hand and employees together with managers have to adapt to the new culture.

    thnx

Good conversation all, but we digress. Was the point of the article not simply to plant a seed? Anger and resentment in the form of editing the article is interesting. Truth hurt a little? Here is the deal: it isn't a matter of who is more important, the question is do both the CEO's and the Middle Managers know their roles and support each other to achieve the strategy of the organization? It is often that disconnect that ruins the company by derailing employee engagement.
