Virgin entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson has been voted Britain’s best “Ambassador for Customer Service” in a recent poll carried out by the Institute of Customer Service (ICS).

The survey, which polled the opinions of 74 industry professionals, saw Branson beat-off strong competition from the likes of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos (who claimed second place) and insurer Churchill’s eponymous toy dog (third place).

Speaking about the poll results, ICS chief executive Jo Causon praised Branson, Bezos and the insurance world’s most popular cartoon dog’s success in the realm of customer service. “Sir Richard is often prepared to take the customer’s side” said Causon adding  that Jeff Bezos “broke the mould” with Amazon, with his concept for “effective, personalised, online customer service.”

Despite being an animation with a rather limited vocabulary, Churchill the dog was credited by Causon as symbolising a company that places “good customer service at its heart”.

The survey kicked off the ICS’s annual National Customer Service week, a series of events which sees participating employers treat their customer service personnel to fun activities such as treasure hunts and “Star Wars themed” weeks. The overall aim is that employers in the public, private and third sectors be able to acknowledge the work carried out by their customer-facing staff.

Around 1,500 companies are set to take part in this year’s celebrations with many more getting involved across the globe. The importance of a progressive approach to customer service appears to be compelling, with ICS research indicating that companies with a good reputation and “committed front-line staff” have a 24 percent higher net profit margin than same sector competitors.

Organisations endorsing the ICS’s week, including Virgin Trains, Unilever, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Barclaycard, also cite the benefits to morale, saying that the ICS’s week reminds everyone in the business that customer service is every employee’s concern.

RE: Branson Voted Top Dog In Customer Service Poll

Branson may champion customer service but his staff don't always share his passion. I have just had a miserable experience with Virgin (TV/phone/broadband), including failure to deliver when I had taken a day off work, (literally) hours spent waiting on a helpline (chargeable on a mobile since the landline phone didn't work!) , failure to call back when promised, unpleasant and bullying attitude from 'customer service' reps on the phone, and no response to email contact. What does he have to say about that?
This vote gives potential Virgin customers the wrong impression!
In my book, Amazon wins hands down - I have never had any problems with them.

I have to agree with amandal2xl - my current experience with Virgin Hoidays is very similar.....do you know they have a clause in the brochure/conditions that says "they have the right to amend prices at any time even after confirmation of booking"?? So I book a holiday and then they say "oh, sorry, that wasn't quite right it will be another ?2,800" - Outrageous.
If anyone knows how I can get in touch with Richard Branson short of a personal summons I'd appreciate it!

Out of a huge sense of frustration I have to agree with each of the above posts about Virgin. I switched from BT to Virgin for landline and broadband and have neither managed to make a phone call or surf the net (I'm doing this from work) for the past six weeks despite numerous calls and e-mails to Virgin Media Customer Services.

Virgin Media Accounts Payable seems to work very well as they have taken about ?80 in payment for not providing a service. I'm pretty sure credit control is equally efficient although the method to cancel my contract is a mystery I haven't quite worked out.

This just goes to show the perils of a huge umbrella brand. If one part of it goes bad it's toxic for the other businesses especially when Customer Service is a USP of the overall brand.

    What Rubbish

Virgin Media are a wonderful example of how to make people leave you as soon as the contact period is over, bad business and bad customer services. CS representatives that yawn and cut calls off, not the way I feel business should be done especially when I am still within a contractual cooling off period. Service Suspended because they cleverly set the monthly limit lower than my actual monthly bill, can't set up a direct debit because my account is over its limit... who thought this up? Promised a call back within an hour to then have to call the 0845 number for the 5th time after waiting an hour and a half later to find out the department I needed had gone home 30mins ago. What a supprise. I wonder if Mr Branson has ever had to deal with his own Customer Services??? Give it a try Richie! You'll soon wish you'd chosen SKY. RUBBISH - TOTALLY REGRET GETTING VIRGIN MEDIA

RE: Branson Voted Top Dog In Customer Service Poll

Not to diminish your suffering, but I think Mr Branson has a case for defence against your gripes: Virgin Media is actually the product of a brand leasing agreement between Virgin and ntl:Telewest when it bought Virgin Moble in the summer of 2007. He has a place on the board, I think, but it's not a company he built up with the characteristic Virgin corporate ethic. Still, Virgin Media's apparant reputation for shoddy service will do nothing for the brand overall.
