We have record unemployment, national debt, and deficit spending. We have a vastly imperfect system. We are our own worst enemy. And we have endless greed, fraud, and scandal. But capitalism’s best days are ahead, and not just because things can’t get much worse.

I’ve got four irrefutably logical reasons why capitalism is alive, well, and thriving. And you know what? I got them from the naysayers - those who think we’re all too greedy for our own good, we should apologize for being success-oriented business people, and America’s best days are behind her.

America has lost its soul and collapse is inevitable

  1. Author / guru Paul B. Farrell (pictured) decries the ‘Death of Soul of Capitalism: 20 reasons America has lost its soul and collapse is inevitable,’ (not to be confused with his ’30 Reasons for Great Depression 2 by 2011,’).
And yet you can go to his website and buy his books with titles like ‘Millionaire Meditation: Stress Management for Wall Street, Corporate America & Entrepreneurs,’ ‘The Millionaire Code: 16 Paths to Wealth,’ ‘The Lazy Person’s Guide to Investing,’ ‘The Winning Portfolio,’ and ‘Zen Millionaires.’ Do you think he really believes capitalism is going down? Think hard now.
  2. Michael Moore’s latest movie is satirically titled ‘Capitalism: A Love Story’ about “the disastrous impact of corporate dominance on the everyday lives of Americans” and his website encourages folks to “SPREAD THE WORD” by putting up signs that read “CAPITALISM DID THIS” in front of empty homes and closed down storefronts.
But the same website promotes all his books and movies and clicking on the appropriate link takes you to Amazon.com where you can buy those books and movies. Of course that has nothing to do with capitalism and how Mr. Moore became a wealthy guy, right?
  3. Al Gore - champion of environmental causes and the man with one of the largest carbon footprints on planet earth - made $140 million by promoting what’s essentially an environmental fad - global warming. Just think about how much that is and how every penny came from hard-working people who paid to see his movie, etc. Sure, it makes me nauseous, but it’s still capitalism at its best.
  4. Sean Penn meets with dictators and posts the interviews on YouTube while Susan Sarandon rallies against, “our doctrine of spreading democracy throughout the world, our fundamentalism is business — the unfettered spread of our economic interests throughout the globe.” That’s all fine and dandy; it’s a free country. But these same people get millions of dollars a movie and live lavish lifestyles from - you guessed it - capitalism.

You know, I don’t care which end of the political spectrum you lean toward, but you’ve got to admit, capitalism gives all these naysayers the voice to rally against it. If capitalism didn’t work so well, if these people didn’t make so much money from it, who would care what they have to say? Who would have even heard of them?

And you know why that’s not “biting the hand that feeds them?” Because people eat this stuff up; pay big bucks for it. So you see, capitalism works so well that it even works for those who wouldn’t admit to being capitalists if you caught them driving an expensive car or hanging out at a villa in Spain.

And that’s precisely why I’m so sure that capitalism’s best days are ahead. Because even the naysayers aren’t buying their own BS. But make no mistake, lots of people are. And that’s exactly how it’s supposed to work, like it or not.

Dude. Quit harping on global warming like it's a conspiracy. You sound like a nutter. Stick to business - you do that much better.

scbaker: Thanks for your sage advice. wink

    FYI, I didn't say global warming's a conspiracy, I said it's a fad. And it's HUGE business, or haven't you noticed?

So is there anything pure? It seems that ideologies on both sides either have an underlying agenda or a blind spot hiding reality and truth.

While I agree with you, you also have to admit that not all things capitalism are good, just as all things socialism or communism are not good.

Capitalism without effective regulations can be disastrous, just as it has been demonstrated with the recent economic crisis.

    Balance and moderation is key.

mrdt: Yes, of course. This post was a bit on the satirical side.

In fact, let me share an email from a reader:

    ----------------------------------------------------------
Subject: Dumba-- article on the wellness of capitalism

Most ridiculous logic I have seen in a long time. All of it shouts a lack of knowledge and understanding on many levels. Because someone uses a system, the system must be good. So if some organization keeps making bad and immoral decisions without consequence because they are "too big to fail" and they know American people bail them out, that system is a good one because it works well for them.
    ----------------------------------------------------------

"The Corner Office" regulars know I write extensively on how to improve corporate America and government regulation as in this recent example: The Banks Are Recovering - Are You? http://blogs.bnet.com/ceo/?p=3026

The point of the "capitalism" post - if you can get past the sarcasm - is indeed that we can improve the system without throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

    Thanks!

    Reminds me of a quote...

Capitalism is based on man exploiting man...in socialism the opposite is true.
