For those of us who write about business, every once in a while, a book or an article comes along that seems so simple on some levels yet communicates great wisdom. “The Connection Culture: A New
Source of Competitive Advantage” is one such work. Here’s a link to the download. The author is Michael Lee Stallard.

He describes his wife’s battle against cancer at Sloan Kettering Memorial Institute in New York, but the broader point he makes (and one that is often overlooked) is that people need to feel a sense of personal connection to what they’re doing in their jobs. Duh! you might say. But how many CEOs really understand this?

”I believe American’s and American business suffers from a lack of
connection,” the author says. “It’s made us ADD-like and it harms our physical and
mental health. ”

Check it out and tell me what you think.

    Connection Counts

Being connected with/to your organization, namely the people within it, is more than just corporate culture. Corporate culture is just a start. Being connected with people is what causes action, interaction, trust, progress, growth, future succession, etc. I agree whole-heartedly with the author here. These types of environments are conducive to good work ethics, mentoring, increased self-realization, proactive teamwork, and much more. Potential is greatly increased and people are genuinely more encouraged, more encouraging, and happier. It becomes more a family, a great place to be and to be a contributing part of (leaders and followers), a profession and not just a job.

When organizations do not operate like this, not an utopia to be sure, people tend not to work together; less efficiently. There is more emphasis laterally than vertically - and the organization and people then tend to suffer; often at the hands of (a limited) few. Points the author makes are what all managers and leaders should be looking to improve upon and/or avoid. Employees will be more effective for their endeavors to do so.

RE: An Important Message: Get People Connected

I love the realness to the connection advocated for in this book. I think connection in the age of connection and conversation is the fundamental building block of both work, business, and personal lives. A well-written and helpful source to get us connected.
