I don’t know about you, but when my Internet connection goes south (which happens fairly regularly with my provider — cough, Comcast, cough), I go temporarily insane. It’s not quite as bad as a power outage, but it’s close: Loss of Internet severely hampers my ability to work — and meet deadlines, pay the rent, etc.
Of course, after a few minutes of despair, I recognize the outage for what it is: an opportunity. I take the time to straighten up my office, call a friend, maybe even hop on the elliptical machine. Web Worker Daily offers eight more ideas for dealing with that unwanted downtime, including:
Crank out your smaller tasks. Have a to-do list that stretches longer than your forearm? Here’s a chance to give it that much-needed reduction. Now that you can’t do your main tasks, focus on the smaller ones. Knock them down like tin soldiers. Feel the satisfaction of crossing things off your list. When Internet comes back on, you can make a new, shorter list. One that doesn’t make you cringe.
If you truly can’t afford to be without Internet access, you can always head to the nearest coffee shop, library, or other Wi-Fi hotspot.
