google-sms-location.jpgAs I’ve mentioned before, Google SMS is a fabulous tool for fetching information from your cell phone. Just shoot a text message to 466453 (GOOGLE) and you can get all kinds of helpful stuff in return: flight status, business listings, weather reports, driving directions, and so on. Of course, if you want localized information, you have to include details about where you are (like the city and/or ZIP code). A new tweak to the service can save you some time by “saving” your location so you don’t have to enter it in every query. Just send the following one-time text message to 466453: set location [ZIP code]. (You can alternately supply the city and state.)

Now, when you want local movie listings, just text movies — there’s no need to include the city or ZIP (unless you’re in a different location, of course). It’s not an earth-shattering improvement, but it can save you some keypad strokes. [via Google Operating System]
