Be Productive When Working From Home

Not everyone is cut out for working from home. The pantry, the television, and YouTube are incredibly persuasive distractions if you have no boss or co-workers nearby. Personally, I’ve found that I thrive at home –  I can be quite productive for 10 hours at a stretch, and in fact knowing when and how to “shut down” and relax after business hours is actually my bigger problem.

When I saw jkOnTheRun’s How to be a Productive Home Worker, I found myself  nodding my head a lot in agreement. This is a great overview of how to be an effective worker at home, whether you’re doing it to escape the cubicle part time or as a self-employed entrepreneur. Here’s a summary with my take on the list:

Set up a comfortable home office. This is essential — you can’t work effectively if your home office is the kitchen table or a desk in the corner of the bedroom. Approach work-from-home professionally, with a quiet workspace, ergonomic seating and computer equipment, and decent lighting. Remember: I recently told you how to optimize your office lighting.

Think about music. At home, you have control over the sound in your “office” in ways that would be impossible at work. Music can make you more productive or can be a distraction. Personally, I like to play White Stripes, Decemberists, and Kristin Hersh while I work, but my wife finds music with vocals distracting. When she works at home, she plays instrumental music. The bottom line: Figure out what works for you; it might not be the same music you choose to listen to when relaxing.

Keep to a schedule. When I work from home, I don’t take the opportunity to sleep in late. I get up at the same time as when I go into the office. I exercise, same as I would when commuting into the office. And I take the same lunch, snack, and dinner breaks. I think this is incredibly important — discipline keeps me on track, productive, and mentally sharp.

Get out of the house. On the other hand, spending the whole day, from rise-and-shine to Conan-and-bedtime would drive me insane. When I work from home, I go out for lunch, and possibly even dinner. It’s important to get out, see some sights, and possibly talk to other human beings.

What to wear. The jkOnTheRun article recommends dressing up to work from home, because it conveys a sense of seriousness about working from home. This is one area that I vehemently disagree with their advice. I barely get out of my PJs all day when I work from home — I put on sweats and I look like a hobo (you know, the way Rick looks when he actually does leave the house). I do that because getting to wear comfortable clothing is one of the benefits of working from home. If I was going to dress up, I might as well go into the office. Personally, I don’t find that what I wear affects my productivity. What about you?

    Love it...

I agree with everything. I have a "real" office, but have the luxury of working from home whenever it makes sense. However, I have a team of 12 at the office that seem to need my moral support at times. Just me being there changes the atmosphere for them (so they say...)

Anyone else in a similar position?

I find that business "cues" affect my business work abilities. While it used to be business clothes, that has waned over time. Now I find it to be morning coffee--just 1-2 sips cues me that I'm starting work and starts my brain into full work mode.

I recommend actually dressing - casual is great, but PJs will ensure that the UPS or FedEx guy will show up and need a signature. What you failed to mention was training your family. After some very awkward interuptions I had to make a rule for my children that unless blood or flames were involved they should not interupt me while working. This was a little hard to enforce sometimes, but at least gave them good guidelines. Now that they are older they will slip me a note or text me if I'm on a conference call.

I mix up everything - kids, music, work, everything.

Kids create interruptions, but typically it is just for a few minutes. It seems contrary to what discipline means - but the "discipline" that I teach them is pay attention to whatever arises as opposed to being a "control" freak.

Music sometimes helps, sometimes distracts - but one can figure out one's own rhythm.

Going out helps - if being alone stresses you out.

And the FedEx/UPS guys - who cares what I look like to anyone else. I know that I can dress up whenever I want, for any occassion that I want - that's all that matters.

@kpierz: Great point about family. A few years back, when my kids were younger, I made up a rule not to bother me during the workday "unless the cat was on fire." They got really good at obeying that rule, and once or twice my daughter came in with something truly urgent and told me "Muff is not on fire but it's just as bad." And she was right.

RE: Be Productive When Working From Home

One of the joys of working from home is being around the kids. Instead of 'training' my son not to interupt, I made him a 'partner' in the business from early on. This way he was not made to feel a nuisance but having fun with Mum and Dad making money. 'Keeping quiet was replaced by 'Mum's talking business so you can listen to it or do something else for you.' So it was choices or just sitting and looking a me! However, around 12years, he actually asked a few questions! He was so at home with his first work experience they hired him.
Sounds idealistic but believe me thinking about why you are at home and what you can offer your children in experience and joy gets you thinking outside the square.
Instead of saying 'working from home', try 'I have a family business' because you do - all the family is part of your fabulous choice.

RE: Be Productive When Working From Home

I love what rockyhorror did with their son - great idea. I did do a little of that from time to time but never involved them on listening to a call - mostly for fear my son would have decided he had lots to say wink This is a great idea. I did take regular breaks with the kids to make sure the weren't ignored and when in school, I'd always take at least 1/2 an hour, or more after school to spend with them. That flexibility one of the great perks to working at home. Now, after working at home for over 16 years my kids are off to college and I just try to manage the dog who tends to bark at squirels on most conference calls.

RE: Be Productive When Working From Home

Different days different stripes for me...I find that variety is
one of the things that I love about working from home.
Whether it means working curled up on the couch or on the
back verandah enjoying the garden scene. If I am not being
productive I ask myself 'why not'? Stepping away from the
computer and desk and picking up pen and paper on the
couch can make me more productive. If I am too busy
stressing about the piles of laundry to focus on what is in
front of me on the computer; then getting up and putting a
load of washing on is worthwhile. As long as you are
meeting your goals and objectives I think it is completely
okay to enjoy the freedom that working from home can
bring you rather than just move the office cubicle into your
    house!
