Don’t look now, but the Kindle just got its butt kicked. The new Barnes & Noble Nook matches the Kindle 2’s $259 price tag but offers such amenities as a color touchscreen (in addition to its main e-ink screen), Wi-Fi, book lending, PDF support, and a memory-expansion slot.

Gizmodo has a pretty exhaustive roundup of Nook coverage, including photos, videos, and some hands-on lovin’. Verdict: They like it!

Over to you: Think you’ll buy one? After all, most Kindle owners think the device is the greatest thing since sliced bread, and the Nook appears to best it at every turn. Vote in our poll and/or share your thoughts in the comments.

Personally, I’m still waiting for these gizmos to drop below the $200 mark and e-book prices to get more realistic. In the meantime, I’m perfectly happy reading e-books on my iPhone.

This is when competition is a good thing. It will be interesting to see if and how Amazon responds to the added nifty and consumer-friendly B&N features.

Agreed! I suspect we'll see sub-$200 hardware prices after the holidays, but it'll probably take longer before the books themselves get any lower.

I'm interested in trying one, but it's not available outside the US - and I'm in the UK.

@BizHacks Dave: Spoken like a true early adopter. Is there ANY gadget you don't immediately buy?

no, calll me old fashioned (and maybe a cheapskate) but at a reading pace of 1-2 books per week I'd be broke if not for my library card, plus if I drop a book into the tub I only owe the public library the cost of 1 book versus losing my entire personal library and toasting the expensive reader.

RE: Poll: Will You Buy a Nook?

Nope. I use a computer/laptop to look up quick things that I need to read, like news, an article, craft directions, regulations for work, etc. but for lengthy reading I HATE reading on a screen!!! The bifocals work well enough for what I have to do already so why should I push it?

I grew up going to the Library every Sunday to help my Grandmother as she worked and I love the smell of books. I love the feel of a book in my hands, the turning of the paper pages and when I finish reading many of them I find that I want to keep them for the future. I own many of my grandmother's, great-aunt's, second-cousin's books...old books from the 1930s and '40's that carry ads to donate your books to soldiers in the war. These are treasures...treasures not available on a Nook or Kindle!! I seek out these little "treasures" because to me books, actual books, are important and should be read, re-read and passed on, to be loved...you can't do that with a cold hard machine.

@jenyj89: I feel much the same way about magazines, believe it or not. I've yet to see an electronic device that could take the place of one. But as for books, much as I agree about the tactile experience, I love, love, love the convenience of always having one in my pocket (on my iPhone).
