Speed Up Your Web Browsing with Google Chrome

When Google Chrome hit the streets a year ago, most people considered it something of a novelty. It was fast, sure — but also rough around the edges and missing a lot of important features. Well, time flies, because Google just released Chrome 3, and it’s starting to look all grown up.

Want to experiment a bit, but not necessarily commit to Chrome? You almost can’t go wrong: It was fully installed (and had imported all my existing Internet Explorer bookmarks) about two minutes after I clicked the install button. With that kind of speed, it makes sense to install it as a secondary browser for non-mission-critical browsing.

This new version of Chrome hasĀ a number of obvious updates. The New Tab page is nifty, for example; you can drag page thumbnails around and pin them in place, making it a handy alternative to your bookmark list. The combination address box/search box now clearly labels results so you know which items are from your bookmarks, which are search results, and which are surfaced from your history. And the browser is also easy to dress up with themes — a nice visual flourish.

Of course, Chrome’s selling point is its speed, and Google claims that Chrome 3 is now more than twice as fast as the early Chrome beta.

Are you going to try Chrome, or stick with tried-and-true Firefox or Internet Explorer? Sound off in the comments.

Everybody talks about Chrome's speed, but I really don't find Firefox to be slow. I mean, it might take a second longer here or there, but so what? It will take a lot more than a slight speed bump to get me to switch browsers.

RE: Speed Up Your Web Browsing with Google Chrome

I use Chrome on my old desktop and my laptop because it loads (the program itself, not necessarily the pages) much faster than IE. When it first debuted, I had several problems with pages saying my brower was not supported, but that seems to have been fixed - 99% of the pages load fine now.

However, I still use IE at work and on my more powerful desktop because EVERY page works with IE. Plus I do not like Chrome's download manager.

    Thanks for feedback (no MHT).
CometBird is FireFox's twin, but is trimmer and faster.
It also can use all the extensions from FireFox.
So you can use unMHT extension to save as .MHT
I will be sticking with Opera CometBird and Firefox, as they all can save as .MHT

RE: Speed Up Your Web Browsing with Google Chrome

I tried Chrome a couple of months ago and am still suffering after affects. It reset a bunch of settings on my computer which caused, not only added aggrevation, but lost time trying to rectify the damage.
Very cautious about trying the new version.

RE: Speed Up Your Web Browsing with Google Chrome

I prefer Firefox due to the add-ons that radically expand its functionality. I like Chrome as a basic browser, but it lacks a rich community of add-ons. I will use Chrome as a secondary browser. Thanks for the article!
