A single, universal phone number that reaches out to you at work, at home, and on the road is a great idea, and that’s just one of many reasons I love Google Voice.

I am also a fan of the voice mail transcriptions that get texted to my cell phone. But I do not love the way Apple has blocked Google Voice apps from the iPhone. Thankfully, Palm doesn’t have the same hang-up about Google Voice on the Pre.

gDial Pro is a home-brewed app for the Palm Pre that lets you place calls from your Google Voice phone number, truly letting that single universal number become the public face of your life or business. It’s still in beta, but I’ve found it works well. And let’s face it; when it comes to Google Voice on the go, we don’t have a lot of options right now.

The app has a dialer that looks very similar to the one built into the Pre, and even features something the Pre itself lacks: Visual voicemail. You can see who called and when, and tapping an entry displays the message transcription. There’s more, too: A favorite contact list, texting, and the ability to dial anyone in your Pre’s contact list.

Since this is a home-brew, you won’t find gDial Pro in the Pre’s official app store. It’s quite easy to get up and running, though — just follow my easy five step guide to installing home-brewed apps on your Pre.

News flash: gDial Pro has been added to the official App Catalog, so you no longer need to home brew to get this cool app.
