Why spend big bucks on a portable 3G Wi-Fi router like the Verizon MiFi 2200 when your Palm Pre can do the same thing for free?

Over at the Palm Pre Hacks Blog, you can learn how to turn your Pre into a Wi-Fi router. That means you’ll be able to share its high-speed Internet connection with your netbook, your notebook, your iPod Touch, and so on.

(If you’re feeling generous, you can even let some Internet-starved friends or co-workers join the Wi-Fi party.)

Here’s a video that shows you the basic steps; check back after for some caveats.

As you’ve probably deduced by now, this is a fairly hack-heavy process. You need to do things like access your Pre’s Linux command-line, register for — and install — Palm’s s

oftware development kit, and so on.

In other words, it’s not for novices, and even tech-savvy users should follow the instructions to the letter. Neither Dave nor I have put this to the test yet, but you can bet that we will — it’s something we plan to cover in How to Do Everything - Palm Pre, our upcoming book. (Oh, the shameless self-promotion! Will it never end!)

Speaking of the Pre, don’t miss these easier, but equally useful, tips and tricks:

Be warned: Connecting a computer to the Sprint wireless network through a phone is considered "Tethering" and is not allowed under Sprint's normal Internet package. If you follow these steps, you will be violating your contract and can have your service disconnected. Generally, Sprint cannot tell if you are tethering unless you download excessive amounts of data (>5GB/Month). If you want to do this legally, consider signing up for one of Sprint's Tethering packages.
