The Three Worst Things About the iPhone 3G S

Like most of my kind (read: geeks), I spent the better part of yesterday afternoon glued to live feeds from Apple’s WWDC conference. Cheapskate that I am, my favorite bit of news was the price reduction of the 8GB iPhone 3G to $99.

As for the hotly anticipated new iPhone, there’s a lot to like — and quite a bit to dislike. Here’s what Apple got wrong with the iPhone 3G S:

  • The name: “iPhone 3G S”? Really? And that “S” just dangling out there? If you’re gonna add a suffix, go with a “Plus” or “Pro.” Heck, if the “S” really stands for “speed” like Apple says, call it the iPhone 3G Speed.
  • The upgrade policy: Because the iPhone plays a role in my professional life, I’d love to get the new model. In fact, I kind of need to. However, only new customers and those adding new lines of service are eligible for the $199/$299 pricing. Folks like me have to pay an extra $200! Way to flip off your existing customers, Apple. Think I’ll pass.
  • Tethering and MMS delayed: The new iPhone will be available next week, as will iPhone OS 3.0. But two of the most anticipated new features, tethering and MMS, won’t be rolled out with them. They’ve been delayed — and for how long, no one knows. (”Later this summer” is the current estimate.) AT&T gets the blame for this one — but Apple gets the blame for choosing AT&T in the first place.

As I said, there’s a lot to like about the iPhone 3G S (here’s a list of my three favorite features), but the upgrade policy in particular leaves a really bad taste in my mouth. Why Apple chose to exact a penalty from existing customers is beyond me.

What do you think? Is the iPhone so damn awesome that a few missteps are easy to overlook? Or do these gaffes shake some serious dew off the lily? Share your thoughts in the comments.

They know they are going to piss off some people. But they also know that pissing people off will cause a controversy which will boost the media hype. Then Apple will make everything "all better" when they announce (all too late) that they will honor upgrades for existing iPhone customers.

More immediatly, they don't want a bunch of used iPhones flooding the market because you and I will sell or hand-me-down our units. They want potential new iPhone users to latch onto the 3G S before they get a chance to buy up all the used 3G's we will be tossing onto eBay.

RE: The Three Worst Things About the iPhone 3G S

If ATT does not allow tethering and MMS, how are people with phones other than iPhones able to do both?

Sure this isn't an iPhone/Apple issue that they have deftly pushed the blame to ATT?

And your whining about charging full frieght to upgrade before the end of your contract. Come on, you know the price you got in your original contract was subsidized and if you ended the contract before its 24 months, there would be a penalty. So why does the current policy surprise you.

Would your reaction be any different if the phone you coveted or the phone you have was a Blackberry or a LG or Nokia? Of course it would. You want the new iPhone so bad, be a grown up and cough up the bucks.

RE: The Three Worst Things About the iPhone 3G S

@APH3: You call it whining; I call it customer appreciation. So I got a subsidized iPhone 3G. Why can't I get a subsidized iPhone 3G S? I want the phone. I'm willing to stick with AT&T. I'm *not* willing to pay $500 for the privilege. To me it seems unfair that existing customers pay a premium while new customers get a deal.

    Not true

"However, only new customers and those adding new lines of service are eligible for the $199/$299 pricing." Not true. I have had the iPhone since 6/29 ("day one") and get the lower pricing for the new 3GS. Just pre-ordered mine yesterday. It's only the unfaithful (sniff) who waited to buy the second (3G) phone who get no discount on the new phone. You bought late; you'll get all of the software upgrades (some won't work on the original iPhone); and will be missing only the video camera feature. So, do you want to pay $200 for a video camera? happy

@ChanticoSkky77: It's true that OS 3.0 will enable lots of new goodies in my 3G, and that I can get extras like video recording if I'm willing to jailbreak it. But let's not forget: The new model offers better battery life, faster performance, a higher-resolution camera, etc.

RE: The Three Worst Things About the iPhone 3G S

Wow, your three reasons are very trivial and just downright don't even matter. I doubt it was your intention but it sounds like you're trying to grasp at something to criticize about the model and had a hard time at doing so.

Your suggestions for the name aren't hot either. 'iPhone 3G S' sounds much better than 'iPhone 3G Speed' or 'iPhone Plus'. There are already 50 million phones with a pro in their title so I'm glad Apple is trying to stay original with their name brands. Branding it as 'pro' would also suggest that there would have to be a lower end model iPhone, which there isn't unless you count the original 3G which is basically the 3G S without video recording and a compass. Hardly deserving of the distinction of 'Pro'.

Secondly, Apple is not the one hiking up the price, it's AT&T, and they have every right to do so. They gave you a subsidy on your 3G with the promise that you would pay that subsidy off through the course of your contract. If your contract isn't over then they don't have to give you a another subsidy. Plain and simple.

Finally, you've gone without MMS and Tethering for two years, I'm sure you can hold out for a few more weeks. And those two features are hardly the most anticipated.

    @Suzuku:

Why is it every company has a right to make money and charge what it wants, especially if it's written into a contract, even if it tugs at the line of decency and greed, but consumers can't seek the best deal that *they* want? Seems to me any consumer is well within his/her right to ask for anything they want. Doesn't mean they'll get it anymore than the company that requires exorbitant fees will get consumers' business.

Sounds like a bit of a double-standard to me.

RE: The Three Worst Things About the iPhone 3G S

The iPhone is simply a consumer product. It has a short battery life that shortens every time you charge it. Worst of all you can't even buy extra batteries other than the extra battery pack you plug on. Furthermore the sms sucks, since the Keyboard can't even be rotated horizontal when typing. The camera suck and it can't even record till now they are finally changing it. App should have finalized there design before throwing ****** prototypes into the people. Companies don't just sell products that haven't been finalized. Like other smart phones that have better cameras longer battery and more freedom. The iPhone is only a piece of plastic with some metal and glass that feels like it is made in China. There whole design sounds like a disgrace to the phone companies. Cameras that can't record Bluetooth that can't sync with other phones. What next 5 or + more prototypes for sale. I am seriously getting sick of there stupid idea of selling unfinished products.

RE: The Three Worst Things About the iPhone 3G S

    @Suzuku:

You are right about the criticisms.

    1. (Name) This is one of the most stupid criticisms I have ever heard. Who really cares about the name? 99% of the population probably won't avoid buying something because of name that's not too clever. Look at the ShamWOW. They were trying to be creative with that and they ended up with an annoying name that drives me crazy.

iPhone 3G S: Simple and original.

    2. (Upgrade Policy) Maybe this could have been thought out more, but they did it for a reason. If you don't like it, don't buy it. I would say price shouldn't be something to complain about as much as technical issues, but I will admit that I don't like the pricing either.

    3. (Tethering and MMS Delayed) " They?ve been delayed ? and for how long, no one knows. (?Later this summer? is the current estimate.) AT&T gets the blame for this one ? but Apple gets the blame for choosing AT&T in the first place. "

I agree with Suzuku again: You have gone 2 years without these, so 2 more months shouldn't be a problem. If they would've tried to cram in these things, it would've been bad. They also could have delayed EVERYTHING just to put these in, and you would be complaining about that even more.
The whole "Apple Choosing AT&T Thing" is just another filler to make your point longer, and it makes it even more faulty. If this really is a problem, than it is the same problem on all other iPhones, not just this one in particular.

To the writer: Your article is basically flawed altogether. Only one of your points is even relevant, while your name point has nothing to do with the phone itself and your delay complaint is also nothing to do with the phone itself except that the latest won't have these features. So wait a few months and stop complaining about this because Apple handled this one really well IMO.

Should be titled: The One Itty-Bitty Thing Wrong with the iPhone 3G S, Plus Two Additional "Flaws" That I Wrote That Aren't Relevant to the Phone Itself.

    Want tethering?

    go to...
    help.benm.at/help.php

    then click Mobileconfigs download.
    the rest is self explanatory.

It gives your iphone 3G/3G-S full tethering capability via bluetooth or usb. After the install, check it out in your Network settings.

    face it, the phone sucks

AT&T's network cannot handle the MMS and tethering. Plus they will be slammed with people dropping because tethering costs an additional $60!!!!

Once Android is released, people will be switching to those phnoes and off the $$$ Apple bandwaggon.

In Canada, Rogers Wireless, gave me an upgrade for the Iphone 3G S for the same price as a new customer. That is I paid C$299 and still get MMS and full tethering capability. The limitation is NOT from APPLE but from AT&T.

RE: The Three Worst Things About the iPhone 3G S

    The WORST thing?? THE PHONE!!

Can't believe that you missed that one. As a business user, I cannot believe that they built a great handheld computer and put in such a terrible phone. It's not the network. Compared to my Blackberry Curve on AT&T, the 3GS misses and drops many calls, 1 bar or no bars where the Curve had 3 or 4. Please fix that.

    Other things.
The sleek look and feel is great, but it is too slippery. If you use it a lot for messaging, you need to be able to keep it in your hands without it slipping around or having to put it in a bulky rubbery housing. I keep it in a belt clip and you have to be very careful when removing it from the clip that it doesn't slip from your hand. Fell to a New York sidewalk once already.

The keyboard is still difficult to use. And, some characters should be on the default keys, like @ and .

It needs to have a shortcut library, or a place to go to and add specific text shortcuts.

Better navigation tools in the e-mail function. Go to end, scroll to more specific location without having to go to top and search.

There's a few. Otherwise, it's great. Even the high battery consumption is not THAT bad.

RE: The Three Worst Things About the iPhone 3G S

I feel so bad for you Rick. Majority of the responses here are ripping you a new one, but I completely agree with you.

    - The name of a product isn't just a name. It essentially IS the product. It represents the product and everything associated with it. Also, I always use quotes in Google searches, such as "iPhone 3G 3.0." With the new "iPhone 3G S," we will get search results like "iPhone 3G S"upercalifradgilisticexpealidotious and "iPhone 3G S"ucks.

    - What is the difference between an existing customer signing up for two more years and buying the new iPhone -- and a new customer signing up for two years and buying the new iPhone? The difference is that existing customers have proved trustworthy by paying their bills for the past xx months. Apple is so flipping off existing customers.
@ APH3: He didn't say it was surprising or unexpected or unprecedented. He said that it was a big middle finger - which it is - and it is simply bad customer relations.

    - @Suzuku: We've been waiting for MMS for 2 years already, when everyone else has had it for those 2 years. It has been more than enough time to get this going. Saying, "you can wait 2 more months" is like telling you that your brothers and sisters get ice cream today, but that you have to wait until next week. And then when next week comes, telling you that you've to wait another week.
If you think tethering and MMS are the least anticipated features, tell me what you've been reading. Any dedicated iPhone website with forums is loaded with "When will I get MMS?" and "Why can't I tether?" Jailbreakers have been trying to get these features since Installer.
The squeaky wheel gets the grease.. If we do complain about it now, maybe we really will get tethering and MMS in 2 months. If we don't complain now, we won't get it for much longer.

I completely agree with suzuku and mariobrawler! RESPECT.

It seems like the guy who wrote this article had such a hard time criticizing the new Iphone, that he had to rip on its name. Whats up with that? I dont have any problem with the 'S' (for speed? sexy?super? etc. whatever) distinguishing it from its predecessor. its like criticizing Windows XP, Xbox 360, Wii, Windows Vista, Nintendo DS; its so trivial. haha even if it was called 'speed', people would probably nickname it 'S' anyway..Apple's just skipping a step for efficiency lol.

Is AT&T the only supplier for the iphone in the US? In Canada, Rogers and Fido provides Iphone plans. C:)
Im not going to get the S because its $100 more than the older one and its new features dont seem to be significant enough for it to be worth it for what i'll use it for (theres one bad thing i could chalk up about the iphone 3GS) .

    peace

I like three features about iphone 3GS,I appreciate you to describe it here.I am also using 3GS its just amazing,I can search better material about Cheap Web Hosting on it and also utilize its other internet concerning tools. Its just reliable to use.Must say that everything has its nice and worst aspects so 3GS also has some worst features.which can create serious problems. To accomplish these company requires a dedicated server to fix the problem.overall its good for use.
