Google Releases Faster, Smarter Chrome Browser, Says 'We Call it Chrome 2, But You Shouldn't'

“Chrome” is one of those words that really starts to look weird after you see it a few times. See if you don’t agree by the end of this post. Or possibly even this paragraph: Google just took the wraps off Chrome 2, the latest version of its upstart Web browser. Well, what do you think? Is it looking weird yet?

Chrome 2’s highlights include faster performance, several hundred bug fixes, a form-autofill feature (love that), and the option to remove thumbnails from the celebrated New Tab page. Here, I’ll let this Google propellerhead show you the goodies:

All good stuff, to be sure. But I’ll be honest: I’ve barely touched Chrome since it debuted last September. Not because I found it slow or buggy, but because I heart Firefox. Which begs the question: What about you? Any Chrome users out there? If so, what’s the draw?

Oh, and about that headline: Google isn’t officially calling this release “Chrome 2″ (and you won’t find it labeled as such on the product page). Rather, the name is “mainly a metric to help us keep track of changes internally,” according to the Google Chrome Blog. Whatever.

In any case, current Chrome users will get the update automatically. Everyone else can download Chrome 2 directly.

Got a tech dilemma? We're here to help.

Am I the only one, or is it common? - The fact that Firefox
has become so dumb recently: you click the Bookmark title on
Menu bar, and voila - Edit this bookmark . Whenever
page cannot be displayed an annoying dialogue box appears:
"FF can't...". And it seems to take an eternity to
completely load a page. And crashes more often.

Chrome on the other hand runs just smoothly, being faster
and more stable - especially with its multiple processes.

*Sigh* Love Firefox (and its sweet addons), but now I'm
waving goodbye to it and switching to Chrome.

Do any of you chrome lovers ever save a web page to your hard drive ?
Do you like the fact that you get the baggage of an accompanying folder called "Name of your saved web page" with _files on the end.
Do you like the fact that within that folder there can be links (or whatever) that can be a mile long ?
Opera, IE, and Firefox(with unMHT extension) can all save a web page as a single file (no folder) with a .MHT extension.
Let me know when Chrome can do that, and I will give it another try.
    Rob
PS I wouldn't mind the option to have traditional menus as well.

Unfortunately, in my industry, I'm stuck with IE because the
website I have to use only supports IE. So, for that website
and ONLY that website, I use IE. I use Chrome for everything
else. It's faster, it's more stable, it's not Microsoft! If I could
I would eliminate any trace of a Microsoft product from my
    computer.

@chelenixon: Which version of IE? I find 7 to be much improved over 6 (blech), and IE8 is really nice.

Chrome is my default browser. I love the speed (it comes up
almost instantly where firefox takes around 30 seconds - and
yes I have applied the minor fixes for speed). I love the
ability to have a browser task manager. I love the fact that
one blocked tab does not stop the rest of the browser. Many
of the features that others say they cannot live without are
just not that important to me.
