Why You Should Create a Google Profile. Now.

A Google profile is exactly what it sounds like: A personal profile that appears when someone does a Google search of your name. My advice: Create one now to make sure you’re properly represented on the Web.

What does that mean? Suppose a prospective (or current) employer decides to play Sherlock Holmes and types your name into Google. Who knows what the results might be? If you have a commoner’s — er, common — name like “Dave Johnson,” they could be downright disastrous.

For example, the links could lead to an unflattering news story, a politically incorrect blog post, a site about growing marijuana, or the like — any or all of which could cost you a job. Doesn’t matter if the search results pertain to a different person with the same name — the negative associations might already be made.

A Google profile won’t necessarily rescue you from these associations, but they may help you “guide the message,” so to speak. Google now lists name-search results in a Profile section at the bottom of the query page. By creating a profile, you can stake a claim to that section and, hopefully, steer searchers to the real you.

For starters, you can upload a photo of yourself so people who’ve met you will know they’ve found the right person. A profile also lets visitors send you messages (but doesn’t give them your e-mail address — nice bit of privacy protection there), read your bio, get contact information (whatever you care to provide), and see any links you care to share.

Speaking of which, a profile provides an easy opportunity for you to promote your business. Ultimately, you’ve got nothing to lose by creating one, and plenty to gain.

    Hi Rick...
Not sure if I understood what you said by "creating a profile"! I thought google listed only what has been publicly posted. You said: "Google now lists name-search results in a Profile section at the bottom of the query page." I didn't find this "profile section" and I'm familiar with Google. Below is all the Google's keys in the bottom of the page. Did I miss something? Thanks,

I can't find it either, and I just searched Dave Johnson...so I'm not sure where that screen shot came from.

If this is a new Google product, then it looks like Marissa Mayer has let her guard down on the user experience!

You need to create an account. You can do this via 'My Account' on the top right of the Google home page.

I just created my profile and then googled my name. My profile, complete with unflattering pic, are listed at the bottom of the first page. Good idea. I never thought of doing that.

Nice, I saw this link after Google had suggested to update my profile.
I added some content, ( they say the more the better ), added one photo, and a little bit of contact info.
Then did the obligatory "google" search and out of the other "me's" out there my profile showed at the top.
I also verified my name through Google's "knol" pages.
Showing people you are whom you say.

I still don't think it's a good idea to put all that information online for anyone to easily find, especially right along with your picture. If a potential employer were to think I'm a Kentucky girl who likes to put sunglasses on my dog or a black lady who's a COO of a hospital, and not want to hire me because they're going to make assumptions that it's me... it's just ridiculous. I wouldn't want to work for a racist or dog hater anyway. Or, at the very least, someone who leaps to, and makes very important decisions on, conclusions .

What I do want to do is protect myself from the creepy guy looking over my shoulder at the public library and finding out where I live. Sure, he can get my email address - or even follow me home. But there's no way I'm helping him find me.

FYI: If you have a site you would like to pop up when someone searches for your name, there's a link "Add A Result" at the bottom of the page.

If a person is a racist, they may or may not hire you if you're black or whatever. Unless someone's switched races since uploading the photo, WYSIWYG.

Plus, generally I believe people can overcome a bias if there is a job that needs to be done and you're the one to do it. They may not like it, but it is what it is. Actually, everybody is prejudice about somethings.

You made an interesting point about someones apprehension to upload their pic, perhaps if they're African American women. I've noticed a lot of white men and womens photos on networking sites like Linkedin but significantly fewer African American. I'm proud of my chubby black self, and I believe that comes through in my pic.

My goodle profile shows up here: http://www.google.com/profiles/AnitaYMathis. Although I'm not looking for a job so that I can work for someone else, if someone was interested in me, well here I am.

So with identify theft on the rise - tell me again why I would want to make sure that my identity is correct on the Internet, of all places.

I'd wasted a bit of time trying to get this working until I finally discovered I can't see Dave's profile either. UIs this some kind of American-only feature? I know the Knol "Name Verification" system is.

Actually, I'm glad that I looked at Anita's profile, I hadn't realised that there was a separate "Search Profiles" Google Search, I thought that looking up my name would bring it up in a regular Google Search. I'm a tad disappointed about that as I think people Googling me will be using the normal Google Search Bar. Glad i found it though - http://www.google.com/profiles/Nathan.A.F.Bernasconi

RE: Why You Should Create a Google Profile. Now.

Actually I think it is a good Idea to have the profile out there.
Later I will have a better picture but that would not make much of a difference as you find plenty more about me and my business out there.

So follow the idea and let people know more about you.. you are great let the world know about it...

Also, is there a way to link to this without always typing

RE: Why You Should Create a Google Profile. Now.

That's a nice service, and I had checked it out. Personally, I'm not excited about making a mad rush to the bottom of the page...

I did find this Online Profile service (http://www.qalias.com/af/SJ01) and it's been consistently getting me at the Top of Google's page under my name - which is very common - Stephen Jones.

Much more professional site as a way to be found on Google by name...

RE: Why You Should Create a Google Profile. Now.

I am a Canadian who has a Google account (& therefore a profile), but can't see any "Profile Results" when I do a name search (Dave Johnson or me). I gather this means that, as Nugby suggested 05/12/09, this is an American only feature.

If you want to guarantee your presence on Google' first page, you can always buy sponsored ads that show up whenever your name is searched and refer to your website. That way you can give some more money to Google - I?m sure they need it happy

    Visit LookupPage.

Considering identity theft is a booming 21st Century crime this should open new candidate targets. I cant see this as a great idea especially when i have been profiled on web pages and the attempts to illicit further personal information was astounding. Not for me.

I think it's very smart to grab your name in the Google name space while you can. Great tip!
