Microsoft would like you to save your files anywhere you like, as long as it’s the My Documents folder. The Office apps are complicit in this Draconian conspiracy by opening the Documents location by default when you try to save or open a file. Well, you don’t have to stand for that. In Office 2007, it’s easy to specify any folder as the default save location, even if it is nowhere near Documents. Just do this:

  1. Click the Office button at the top of Word.
  2. Click Options, and then click Advanced.
  3. Scroll to the bottom, to the General section, and click File Locations.
  4. Choose Documents, click Modify, and then select the location you want to use as your document store.

If you’re still using Office 2003, the process is similar:

  1. Open the Tools menu and then click Options.
  2. Click the File Locations tab.
  3. Choose Documents, click Modify, and then select the location you want to use as your document store.

Personally, I totally use all the default locations for storing my files — Documents, Pictures,  Music, and so on. But I know a lot of people like to color outside the lines. And it’s nice, I suppose, to have that option. Photo by dragontomato

The 'My Documents' folder, is like a mine shaft dug by a rabid Wombat. I hate it with a vengeance.
Also there are occasions (zipping perhaps ?), where very long folder/file paths cause problems. And you are going to get those problems 'down the mineshaft'.
You should have a folder called C:\Downloads and save everything to there.
If you have it sorted by date, then the most recent will be a the top, and related groups of files that you have saved will all be adjacent to each other, when you decide to move them somewhere else (later).

PS if you can get the Paint program to save to such a folder (by default), and remember jpg not bmp, then we will 'sing about you around the camp fire' for years to come.

Didn't you chew me out recently for wanting to change the default location Outlook hits for file attachments? Draconian conspiracy is right!
