interactive-guide.jpgChange is hard – that’s why you’re not supposed to bite pennies. Changing software is hard too – just ask anyone who has upgraded from Office 2003 to Office 2007. Though the new ribbon interface exposes commands that were hard to find in older version of Office, it also hides, scrambles, and rearranges all the stuff you used to know like the back of your hand. Thankfully, Office Online offers an interactive command reference guide for Word.

The guide shows you Word 2003; just select a tried-and-true command from the toolbar or menu. First, you’ll see a short explanation of where to find the feature on the ribbon, and then the guide shows you exactly where on the ribbon you need to go. If it were any easier, someone from Microsoft would just come to your office and write your expense report for you.

If you like the Word 2007 guide, you might also appreciate a similar interactive guide for Excel and an interactive guide for PowerPoint.

I'll admit: I've resisted upgrading to Office 2007 because I don't want to have to relearn the entire thing. I like menus. I have no problem with Office 2003 the way it is. That said, I'll probably have to move up at some point, so this will come in handy...

I was dubious about Office 20067 at first too, but I spent a few hours with the ribbon and I was totally sold. It's simple and elegant and it exposes all sorts of pretty amazing features that most people hardly knew existed in older versions of Office. I wouldn't go back to the spaghetti menus of Office 2003 for pretty much anything.

Well, I've got a new PC coming in a couple days, and I think I'll install the 60-day Office 2007 trial. Mostly I'm interested to see if Outlook 2007 is any less hideously bloated than 2003.
