Search the Web More Efficiently with MelZoo

melzoo2.jpgIs there really room in the world for yet another search engine? After all, we already have Google, Yahoo, and Live Search (I assume that Cuil was just some sort of practical joke gone horribly wrong). But don’t be so quick to discount newcomers: MelZoo is an innovative search engine that displays results in a persistent sidebar.

I’ve actually wanted this sort of search result presentation for years. I find that opening pages from a set of search results in their own tabs is a clumsy hack compared to MelZoo, which split the browser in half. Hover over a result on the left, and the result displays at full size on the right. Each result gets cached, so you can quickly browse and compare a half dozen search results just by hovering over each one in turn.

I haven’t had time to assess the accuracy and freshness of MelZoo’s searches, but I did search for “BNET Dave Johnson” (what, did you think I’d search for Rick?) and the first result was the story I wrote just two days ago about Cloudlet’s tag clouds for Google. Sharp!

Got a tech dilemma? We're here to help.

Much as I hate to compliment you in public, I love this thing! Especially like being able to mouse over a result on the left and see the actual page on the right. This is the ultimate search engine for people with widescreen monitors!

Yes, that's a great point -- on a widescreen monitor, MelZoo rocks.

Too bad they couldn't come up with a better name. I mean, it's not as bad as Cuil or Palm Pre, but it's pretty bad. Why not RickZoo?

well, having the ability to visually preview websites is priceless, no doubt; however, i'm not too sure about the actual results. i ran a search for 'the limority report,' which should bring up various items that i'm familiar with. this resulted in page after page of anything and everything with "the minority report" -- in fact, it didn't even provide me with the option of correcting my search request in case i actually meant "the minority report" as opposed to "the limority report." though the user experience is the ultimate as far as search engines go, in the grand scheme of things, the search results are what matter. alas...

Sometimes I think we're all spoiled to death by Google. Every time I try Yahoo or Live Search, I get results that are mediocre at best. Hopefully MelZoo will improve over time, if not adopt Google as its underlying engine.

I suspect dragging the vertical divider, may become tiresome ?
I have written to them suggesting -

What about allowing Ctrl and the Left and Right Arrow keys.
If the vertical divider is mid way (neither hard left nor hard right), then -
Ctrl Left Arrow moves divider Hard left
Ctrl Right Arrow moves divider hard Right
If the Divider is Hard Left or Hard Right, then -
Ctrl and either Arrow keys puts divider in the center.
(User may be confused about which to bring to center, so we accept either)
