text-messaging.jpgDo you text like a teenager, or do you find the whole idea of text messaging pointless? That’s the subject of today’s Business Hacks poll — be sure to cast your vote!

I find there’s a definite generation gap when it comes to texting. I use it occasionally, but mostly for non-business purposes (like communicating with my wife). Many of my contemporaries don’t text at all, instead relying on e-mail or good old-fashioned voice calling.

But we’re all 40 or older. I think young’uns are far more likely to text, as they’ve grown up with the technology. What do you think? Hit the Comments and share your thoughts on text messaging — and don’t forget to mention your age.

In the meantime, if you’re in the camp that finds SMS pointless, be sure to read Seven Productive Uses for Text Messaging.

RE: Business Hacks Poll: Do You Use Text Messaging?

43 (almost 44) - if I used a cell phone more frequently and had more of a social life, I might text...however, I'm a mom of 2 year old twins with a full-time job and a house - no social life outside of family & email works just fine.

<-- 40 and increasingly turning to texting for those times when I just want a short burst of information without a full-fledged phone call.

RE: Business Hacks Poll: Do You Use Text Messaging?

    37. At first I was skeptical, but since I am
on tradeshow floors alot, it's the best way to
actually get a msg to someone in a noisy
environment. I also use it with my wife when I
am on conference calls and she is trying to get
through to me! I would urge anyone who is on a
Blackberry or iPhone with colleagues to install
    BeeJive (http://www.beejive.com/)-- it's an IM
client on your phone that does not incur any
data fees (atleast on Blackberry)--so you can
have a more interactive conversation than just
texts with all the immediacy of texting and no
    fees.

    48yrs young.
Sure I text. Sometimes you don't have to initiate a phone call to say something short and quick. However, if the message is very involved, then a phone call prevents me from developing a repetitive stress injury...! So I guess length of message is key.

RE: Business Hacks Poll: Do You Use Text Messaging?

60 and I text to get a quick response both from other professionals and from family. Already, email seems too slow for some issues. And it is far less rude than shouting into a cell phone on a crowded plane so the whole world knows some intimate detail they really didn't want to overhear.

RE: Business Hacks Poll: Do You Use Text Messaging?

    48. I started texting with 250 texts a month because I have teenagers and I find they respond better that way, plus they can text between classes at school. I finally went to unlimited with them because I also manage some late 20s and early 30s. It's their generation's way of communicating -- when they're running late for work or they think of something while they are out. I'm also finding that several professionals my age are starting to text because it's quick, instant and private. My husband is into technology and also 48, he won't text at all. He thinks the whole concept is stupid because "it's a phone".

RE: Business Hacks Poll: Do You Use Text Messaging?

I am 58, and find that I am using texting more and more for both business and personal reasons. As with all new forms of communication, once I got the hang of it, it was a snap. I realized it is much more effective in certain circumstances than using my cell phone and possibly have to use voicemail. The recipient can just open the text for the message, rather than having to go through a number of steps to listen to voicemail.
