xobni3.jpgIt’s time to seriously rethink the old adage about free lunches. I mean, 10 punches on my China Queen card and my next visit to the buffet is free.

But even better than that, today’s SMBs can operate without spending a penny on software, as evidenced by the following freebies — our picks for the best of 2008.

Honorable mentions go to MailStore Home, OpenOffice 3.0, and PhraseExpress 6. Did I leave your favorite(s) off the list? Hit the Comments and name your favorite freeware of 2008.

Advanced System Care is a great all-in-one system administration freeware; Spyware Cleaner, Registry Cleaner, Disk Defrag, Privacy Sweep, Junk File Cleaner. Unlike other 'TrialWare' products, the free version of ASC is a useful tool. The 'Pro" version is only $29 and is incrementally better. I put it on all the systems I have to administer...

I think Paint.NET deserves an honorable mention as well, along with Artweaver.

Ah, Revo definitely deserves an honorable mention, though I think it surfaced in 2007...along with Startup Delayer, another all-time favorite.

For conferencing and long distance calling, I've been a fan of Skype. I had to talk for hours a day with an associate in the UK and it was free as long as we both used Skype. Its good for conferencing as well if you have several people that need to be online.

OpenDNS provides a free DNS service that makes surfing the internet safe. It has a free account for home use, and also has subscription service for corporation. this is the best freeware I have used this year.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware last year saved my rear several times when it was the only anti-spyware program to find a particularly malignant version of a Internet Security virus. Norton could identuify but not remove, severl other prograams I tried couldn't even identify. Malwarebytes always comes through for me, and is fast about stying up to date also.

RE: The Top Freeware of 2008

Malwarebytes is a good program indeed but what
puzzles me is why you were using Norton in the
first place (nothing personal) but I think it
is the WORST anti_virus program on the market I
use AVG free and it's better than Norton.
Norton couldn't catch my granny stealing a
    cookie from the cookie jar.
Also, I think that Dr.Web's standalone anti-
virus scanner Cureit! desrves some credit here.
It too has completely destroyed viruses et al.
on computers with some serious high dollar
software that couldn't touch them. It saved me
    when I was using F-Secure(more garbage).Suffice
it to say I've learned my lessons well. there
are some others out now worth mentioning but
I've taken too much time already. Good day.
