skydrive2.jpgFile-sharing and -storage service Windows Live SkyDrive will soon offer users 25GB of free space, a five-fold increase over the current amount.

Whoa. I was pretty impressed when Microsoft bumped SkyDrive to 5GB from its original 500MB, but this is a huge deal. Until this, the only place to give you 25GB of free storage was MediaMax, and that service folded a couple months ago. (Truth be told Actually, ADrive gives you 50GB! but I don’t consider it a viable business tool.)

Alas, for now the upgrade is merely “coming soon,” with no official word as to when the upgrade will occur. In the meantime, you can sign up for a free SkyDrive account and use it to create personal, privately shared, and publicly shared folders. (Now we just need a Mozy-like backup utility that leverages the space and we’ll be all set.)

Got a tech dilemma? We're here to help.

Not only is it available, but it works with SmartPhones. Heck of a deal.

I'm still showing 5GB on my account. Are you saying you've got the 25GB on yours?

Just wanted to explain the change I made to the post: I confused ADrive with another service. ADrive is, in fact, a very viable business tool, one that offers a whopping 50GB of storage as part of its free, basic plan. Definitely worth checking out.

How do these items compare with Apple's "MobileMe"?

Free storage is also subject to the TANSTAAFL
rule; I am thrilled that MS is offering this to
its fans (and others) but the 50M limit per
file and the inability to store folders makes
it difficult to use as a backup. Unless I'm
missing something. Maybe MS should offer the
space free and sell a backup program that works
    around its limitations?

@psoucheray: Apples and oranges. (Sorry, bad pun.) MobileMe is designed to keep information in sync between multiple devices, while SkyDrive--for now, anyway--is merely an online file-sharing and -storage service.

Okay, I give up: What's the "TANSTAAFL" rule?

I dunno...seems awfully free to me. happy It may not be perfect, but it doesn't cost a dime.
