geode.jpgYour cellphone knows where you are at all times, so why shouldn’t your computer? That’s the thinking behind the new FireFox plugin Geode, which uses nearby wifi signals to figure out exactly where you’re located when you’re on the go. Once you get past the security worries, it’s really useful to have a location-aware laptop. Want to find a nearby coffee shop? Trying to figure out how to get somewhere? You’ll no longer have to figure out your address and plug it in.

With the upcoming release of FireFox 3.1, you’ll be able to take advantage of the new W3C Geolocation Specification, which allows sites (like say, Yelp) to request your location before providing search results. For now, though, you can download and test out Geode in FireFox 3 with FoodFinder, which shows nearby restaurants.
