repair-my-word.jpgFew situations are more frustrating than a document that won’t open. Repair My Word is a free utility that opens and fixes damaged or otherwise problematic Word files.

Here are some of the common errors Repair My Word can overcome:

  • “Word cannot open the document.”
  • “Word cannot open the document: user does not have access privileges.”
  • When you attempt to open a Microsoft Word 97 document into Microsoft Word version 6.x or 7.x, the document contains garbage characters.
  • “The document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions. Check the file permissions for the document or drive. Use the File Open dialog box to locate the document.”

The program supports all versions of Word from 6.0 through 2003, though it stops short of Word 2007 (and its Docx format). Interestingly, developer GetData also offers repair tools for Excel and Zip files, but they’re $69.95 and $29.95, respectively. [Online Tech Tips via Lifehacker]
