More Thoughts on Google's Chrome

chromel.jpgHere’s what the web browser market looks like right now: 70% Internet Explorer 20% Firefox 10% Opera and then the rest fighting over the scraps. (Here’s what the Business Hacks demographic uses: 56% Firefox 34% Internet Explorer 5% Safari 4% Opera and 2% other.) One analyst has guessed that Google’s new Chrome browser will reach 20% in two years–partially because it will be installed on Android phones and partially because it’s just that damn good.

It is good, as and it’s fast, but it’s much more useful as a replacement for IE users than Firefox users (which make up the majority of our readership). Here’s why:

1) Chrome is faster than IE, allows you to import your settings from it, and is willing to do thing like store your passwords. Plus, it has that really cool feature in which every new page you open up has tabs of your favorite sites on it. It is everything that IE is and more.

2) While Chrome doesn’t seem to suffer from any of the stalling problems that Firefox succumbs to once I’ve got more than ten browser windows open, it doesn’t yet, as Rick pointed out yesterday, allow necessary extensions like Session Saver, ScreenGrab!, etc. If you use any of these extensions (and you should!), you’ll quickly realize how much you miss them if you start using Chrome.

In other words, that market share that Chrome’s going after will probably come from Internet Explorer users.

Um... Scroll wheel function is reversed from normal. Is there a setting somewhere?

It is nice, and nearly got me.
However it does not save as MHT.
    Thus I cannot use it.

RE: More Thoughts on Google's Chrome

Everyone loves to love Google, but here's a reality check:

    1) Chrome is beta. Like all things Google, it will be in beta for approximately twenty years, plus or minus five. Which means the enterprise world can't really rely on it. And, some users won't be satisfied. But, hey, Google and the Google-fans can fall back to "It's beta!" as an excuse.

    2) Google has had to backtrack on an abusive EULA that seriously compromised privacy. Let's face it, Google desperately wants to know you down to your DNA, and deperation leads to ethical compromises. They've said they'll cahnge it, but I'm still apprehensive.

    2) Chrome is seriously lacking in add-ons. And, there is no extension API, but one is "in the works".

    3) Chrome's security is not even close to being real-world tested. Already, security issues are emerging.

    4) Chrome is not perfomance king on all websites. It does have a good engine, but it's kind of like fast memory on a computer: helps, but doesn't make a real noticeable difference except in benchmarks and tests.

    5) Secondarily, speed doesn't *really* matter. I mean, does 1.2s vs 1.8s on a page load mean you will suddenly be happier and more productive?

    6) Chrome, by using a mix of Safari-like technologies, will introduce yet another browser version in the marketplace that will be slightly incompatible with all others. Great. Couldn't they have improved FF instead of putting out yet another browser type.

I don't mean to sound like a Chrome basher, but all this "sis-boom-rah" from the press is just getting tiresome. There are some real issues here that Google will have to address before it can start robbing FF and IE market share. It will take some way just because it's Google, but, like loosing weight, the real test will come after it gets a few percentage points.

I'm not having any scroll-wheel issues. Are you talking about spinning the wheel to scroll or holding the wheel down and scrolling with the mouse?

I installed it, used it for four minutes, and uninstalled it.

Yes, it appears faster, but as a prior commenter noted, so what?

There's absolutely nothing there worth surrendering further privacy over. Add in the gaping lack of plugin/extension compatibility, and it looks like the primary users will be those with no other choice (Android users, for instance)

This sure seem to be faster, from opening the browser to page loading. Then again it is a basic browser with no addons. It sure would be a good replacement for IE but for ******** FF users, it would be just another browser. Like someone said above, they should have improved FF instead of putting out another browser. More work for web designers.

RE: More Thoughts on Google's Chrome

I've been a firefox user since verion 1.0 beta
but I'm now using google chrome half of the
time. Not because it's faster or more secure but
I should admit for the mere fact that it looks
better. Its minimalistic design really lets me
focus on reading the pages instead of fiddling
around with toolbars and settings. I wished a
google chrome like skin was there for firefox
