drive-backup-express.jpgBacking up your PC is about as fun and exciting as a root canal, but it’s something you must do regularly. I’m a proponent of diversified backup plans, meaning using multiple methods (online, local) and media (external hard drives, DVDs, etc.). You can get started down this road using any of these three backup utilities, all of which are available free of charge:

  • Comodo Backup  We’ve covered this before: It lets you back up selected files and folders to any number of destinations, including network drives, FTP servers, and the like. It doesn’t clone entire drives, however; for that you need:
  • Seagate DiscWizard  The OEM version of Acronis TrueImage, which works with any Maxtor or Seagate hard drive, lets you clone your drive, create a backup image, and build a boot CD in case your system suffers a major meltdown. If your system has a different drive brand, try this:
  • Drive Backup Express  A newcomer to the free-backup party, this utility archives entire hard drives or individual partitions. It can perform “live” backups (meaning it runs while you work) and create system-recovery discs and flash drives. Best of all, it has a wizard-driven interface to keep things novice-friendly.

Is there a backup program you like better? Doesn’t matter if it’s free or not; hit the Comments and tell us what you use. We’re curious.

Got a tech dilemma? We're here to help.

Nice! Allway Sync looks similar to Microsoft FolderShare, which I use religiously to sync folders between PCs (all part of my diversified backup plan). Haven't tried Cobian... what's good about it?

I subscribe to Carbonite. $50.00 per year backs up my entire computer. Whenever I modify a file it automatically gets captured by the service. I considered purchasing an external drive, however, two of my major concerns: fire and theft, precluded me from going that route (plus I am not extremely tech savvy). Check them out at www.carbonite.com

Another excellent part of the "diversified backup plan" -- online backups. I'm a Mozy user, though I stick with the free 2GB account for backing up just my data. I don't consider a whole-system online backup to be practical, as it would take forever to perform the initial upload!

I use both local backups (on CDs / DVDs) an online backup. Burning a CD is convenient and very low-cost, while online backup is a must when you fear theft or... forget to burn a CD! Here in Quebec, we have a trusted provider in iMemo (www.imemo.ca) whose online backup service is available to PC and Mac users.

    Another free Windows backup program.

I also use Cobian Backup. It is free. Offers a couple of different styles of compression. Offers password protection. Downside is it makes CD or DVD disk sized directories - it won't burn directly to disks. Thus you must have room for the "temporary" (until verified and burned) directories. There is a bit of a learning curve.

Cucku. It's free, backs up selectively and remotely. I backup my data on 2 different friend's computer as well as my own.

The best backup program I've ever used is 2BrightSparks' SyncBack. The freeware version is great, and the paid version (SyncBackSE) adds a million features that let it do just about about sync, backup, move, or copy operation you could think of. Highly recommended!

Cobian Backup has been around for 4-5 years and it free. Why
was it so hard to find it and put it on the list?
