Obama's Productivity Advice

obama.jpg“The most important thing you need to do is to have big chunks of time during the day when all you’re doing is thinking.” That’s the productivity advice that Senator Barack Obama passes on in a recent conversation with Tory leader David Cameron, according to an Associated Press article. He says that as a manager, you’ve got to be able focus on the big picture, and that means taking time to separate yourself from the tasks of the day and letting the people who work for you do what they do best. “The truth is that we’ve got a bunch of smart people, I think, who know 10 times more than we do about the specifics of the topics,” he states. “And so if what you’re trying to do is micromanage and solve everything then you end up being a dilettante, but you have to have enough knowledge to make good judgments about the choices that are presented to you.”

Slate agrees with Obama’s strategy from a GTD POV, as does Merlin Mann. It fits well with Linda Stone’s theory on receptive distraction. And while most of us don’t have legions of little people to take care of the minutiae, it makes sense to clear your calendar for a least a little while every once and a while to catch your breath and reflect.

    RE: Obama's Productivity Advice

This is advice? Is this really Revelation to some other people out there? Sheesh! Your Mother's should have taught this lesson to you a long time ago. Again, BAD LEADERSHIP. That buzz word "MULTITASK" is non-sense and a "phrase" for the unproductive. Hell, a Hamster on a wheel is busy too but, they don't get anything done. I'll stick with my mother???s lesson: "Do ONE thing at a time and do it right, then move on to the next"...Multitask really means, You've finished nothing and still have 5 jobs left to do. Here's another lesson for these so called "Leaders".. Many who leave people in charge while they are away consistently call back to the office "to see how things are going"...WRONG. If you are a leader and indeed have left someone in charge that???s exactly what you do. If you feel the need to call back you have made bad decisions on one or both issues: A) You either picked the wrong person to be in charge or B), you don't trust your decision. Either way its a bad move. If what Obama says hits some in the head like a bat, then you have a lot of learning you need to do

    RE: Obama's Productivity Advice

That kind of a statement doesn't surprise me at all from that bumbling idiot. Taking some time to develop creative solutions is very important, but "big chunks of time" is just ridiculous. Great thinking, Barack: "How can I be productive? Oh, I'll sit here for a 'big chunk of time,' one of many throughout my day, and think about it!"

The people that are coming up with these kinds of non-sense theories are certainly not the ones coming up with real solutions and getting work done, which is why it makes perfect sense that Obama would say something like that.
