Is Voicemail Dead?

voicemail.jpgThere’s an interesting discussion going on over at TechCrunch on the merits of voicemail. Basically, many tech-savvy folks feel that voicemail is a bad way to interact with people because it’s outside of their normal workflow continuum and is difficult to deal with. Many of those people deal with it by getting their messages turned into emails; telling callers to send an email instead of leaving a message; or simply turning off their voicemail altogether.

I agree with them. While I have no problem talking on the phone, I don’t like listening to messages (especially via any non-iPhone system that doesn’t let you see individual messages) and I am much worse about returning voicemails than emails. I still find myself leaving voicemails, though, because I’m under the impression that many folks are more likely to respond to a voiemailed inquiry than an emailed one.

So maybe I’m a hypocrite, or maybe we’re about to see a seachange in the way that business is done. What do you think? Is voicemail the wave of the past?

    Voicemail: bleh.

VM is woefully inconvenient. In the time it takes to dial in, listen to the message, delete it, etc., I could just as easily have read -- and responded to! -- an e-mail or IM. Of course, some people just prefer verbal communication, and always will.

    Mailbox Is Full!

That's how I dodge it. In the very "old school" enviornment where I am employed, v-mail is all the norm. I often let my v-mail box fill until it can no longer get messages, and leave it in that state. I will listen to the messages, but simply not delete them.

    Please no VM

It took me years to train my friends, and even longer to train my family. PLEASE do not leave a voice mail on my cell phone. I have caller ID and as soon as I see you phoned I will call you back.

I had one friend that told people on her out going message to not leave her a message as she will not listen to them.

I think I will redo the ogm on my office phone offering the caller to send me an email. Good idea! I usually do that when I can't reach someone by phone, why didn't I think to offer that to people that call me!
