Skip the Coffee, Power-Nap for 20 Minutes to Combat Afternoon Fatigue

nap.jpgIt’s about 2:30 p.m. here in the Eastern time zone — right about the time my energy starts flagging. Normally I’d head for the coffee machine, but a group of scientists says I’m better off with a 20-minute nap. That’s the conclusion of a recent study that pitted naps against an extra 90 minutes in bed and 150mg of caffeine:

…The 20-minute afternoon nap proved the most effective at combating sleepiness later in the day; although a long lie-in in the morning and the caffeine also reduced afternoon sleepiness, they did so less effectively than the 20-minute nap.

Okay, just one problem: Most of us don’t have beds near our desks. And bosses, well, they seem to frown on the whole sleeping-on-the-job thing. You could always build a secret bed under your desk, but that doesn’t work unless your name is Costanza. So here’s the question: Is taking a 20-minute afternoon nap even possible for you, or are you stuck with the caffeine monkey? Photo by Dave Morris. [Via Ars Technica]

I had a coworker that would take afternoon naps in her car for 20-30 minutes, and set her cell phone as an alarm. She was always more perky than the rest of us around 3-4pm.

I would love a 20 minutes and my boss would probably be OK with that (he's be joining me). But in our office (a church) there isn't any place we can get away unless we opt to camp out in the sanctuary on the pews. Seriously, just due to our schedules, it would be hard to squeeze in a power nap, but boy it sure sounds good!

In Islamic teaching we are asked to nap as it is very healthy for the body to rebout for the part of the day, so in Saudi Arabia a large chunck of the population take a nap and also the country operate in all the retail sector in split shift pattern.

It may be pretty difficult to take a nap at work. but on days that i really feel sleepy, I use 30mins of my 1hr break to nap in my car. I try to get a good spot in the parking lot always, so if i feel like napping i wont be in full view of everyone. A nap does a whole world of good you know. It is Highly Recommended.

I have been using this method for years. As Corporate Counsel, the job can be intense. Having trained staffers that I will be in a "closed door meeting" for appx 20 minutes each day has proved invaluable over time. As I have matured over the last 35 years, it has a race of pacing rather than sprints. Now my 20 minutes are just another document to reveiw.

Forget caffeine *versus* nap: Try the caffeine nap

Well, there's also the caffeine nap. You drink your cup of coffee, or starbucks double shot (choose your own weapon), then immediately take a 15 to 20 minute nap.

The older one gets, the more things come around to a fashionable 'in-thing'! This concept has lots of history with it and a number of big-names of the past who advocated it.

Toughest part is to do only the 20 minutes and rouse up again to attack the afternoon.
